Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley We provide a range of progressive animal services to support our community. If you make a mistake, admit it and correct it quickly.

We are the only open-admission municipal shelter in Las Cruces and Doña Ana County, dedicated to reuniting lost pets with their owners and finding homes for those in need. Inappropriate social media posts may lead to dismissal as a volunteer and/or removal as a social media editor or administrator on behalf of the ASCMV. Inappropriate posts include (but are not limited to) those that are offensive

, discriminatory, false, confidential, derogatory, defamatory, unprofessional, or disclose non-public information about ASCMV operations, personnel, or volunteers. Inappropriate posts also include unauthorized photographs of the ASCMV premises (public or non-public areas), property, animals, off-site events, personnel, or volunteers. Additional guidelines:
• Ensure photos are appropriate and that non-ASCMV-affiliated people are not tagged without their permission.
• If you engage in dialogue on an ASCMV social media site, be polite, respectful, and use professional language. This includes making sure to the best of your ability to use complete (but not run-on) sentences, proper spelling, correct punctuation and grammar, and stay on topic—as you would in any professional written exchange.
• Do not disclose any personal information about ASCMV staff or volunteers. If you see confidential information posted by someone else, immediately notify a member of the ASCMV management team.
• If you are not sure you have authorization to make a public announcement or disclosure on behalf of the ASCMV—don’t. Ask a member of the ASCMV management team.
• Remember, once a post is out there, you can’t get it back.

Another reminder of why National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is so important. Here's another story about how ASCMV pets are bringing joy to lives of residents here in Dona Ana County!

Back in December, a family stopped by our center “just to browse” after losing their beloved cat of 13 years. But then they met Sugar Plum and everything changed. “I told my daughter we’d think about it and come back another day. We made it all the way to the truck… and 10 minutes later we were back inside to adopt him.” Since that day, Sugar Plum has brought nothing but joy, energy, and love into their home. It’s clear he chose them just as much as they chose him.

Now through April30, we’re celebrating National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day with FREE adoptions for all pets who are already spayed and neutered! Whether you’re looking for a playful pup, a cozy cuddle buddy, or a curious cat with a big heart, your perfect match is waiting at ASCMV. 🐾💛 😻

Lysandra ( #82523) went on her very first Field Trip! Her awesome friend Terri took her on a fun-filled journey to Apodaca Park, where Lysandra got to sniff all the flowers, see kids playing on the playground, and even watch people playing tennis (she was very curious but oh-so-polite)!

Then it was off to La Llorona Park, where she explored the sandy riverbed of the Rio Grande... no water, just sand! She loved it so much she tried to help clean the sand off Terri by giving her lots of kisses. 😄

Lysandra has spent her whole life at the shelter, so these new sights, sounds, and experiences are a big deal for her. She’s a young, smart, calm walker who listens well, knows how to sit on command, and loves toys and giving kisses. She’s still learning about the world, so she’s looking for a gentle, patient adopter to help her continue to build confidence and discover all that life has to offer.

Brooke is a friendly girl who loves being around people and is always at the front of her kennel, ready for attention. She is currently working on building her confidence and leash manners. She thrives around other dogs and has been known to get attached to her kennel mates. She’d likely do well in a home with another calm, friendly dog. Brooke loves treats, enjoys affection, and has the potential to be an amazing companion with a bit of training and a lot of love. Meet Be’jiish ( #92547), a gentle and reserved sweetheart who’s looking for a calm, loving home to call his own. Be’jiish may not be the first to rush up for attention, but don’t let that fool you! This boy loves affection once he knows you're there to give it. During intake, he was a bit startled by the new sounds and activity around him, but he was still incredibly friendly and allowed handling with no fuss. Be’jiish is the kind of cat who thrives in an environment with patient humans who understand that trust takes time. If you’re looking for a low-key, affectionate companion who just needs a little space to shine, Be’jiish could be your perfect match!

We’re so grateful for the amazing volunteers who help get our dogs out of their kennels for fresh air, enrichment, and some much-needed love. Today, one of our dedicated volunteers took Dora ( #71250), our longest resident, out for a walk and it meant the world to her. 💛

Dora can be a little shy, but thanks to the patience and kindness of our volunteers, she’s gaining confidence and showing off her sweet personality. She's already spayed, which means you can take advantage of our adoption special right now and adopt Dora for FREE!

You know how much we love sharing the love our ASCMV pets find… and we’ve got another heartwarming story for you. It’s also the perfect reminder of why National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is so important. 💛

Mesa had been on her future family’s radar for months. They wanted to wait a little bit because their senior dog, Axle, was nearing the end of his life. They wanted to give Axle a peaceful goodbye and avoid the heartbreak of a new pup bonding with him only to lose him soon after.

After some time to grieve, they felt ready. When they came back to our center, Mesa happened to be downtown at the farmers market. They met her there and within minutes, she was heading home with them! Mesa was nervous at first but incredibly sweet. In just three months, she’s become the goofiest, most loving dog.

She smiles showing all her teeth and rolls onto her back when they get home. No matter the day, she brings instant joy. Her favorite activity? Zooming around the backyard in what they call the “Mesa Olympics.” She’s still working on walks and car rides, likely from spending too much time cooped up in her past, but she’s learning every day with love and patience.

We’re so grateful to her adopters for giving Mesa the life she deserves, and for reminding everyone why adoption matters. Urgent Supplies needed for bottle baby kittens! Our amazing foster families are stepping up to care for some of the tiniest and most vulnerable ASCMV pets... bottle baby kittens who need round-the-clock feeding and attention. But they can't do it without your help!

We're currently in urgent need of the following supplies to support their lifesaving work:

- Breeder’s Edge formula (kitten milk replacer)
- Kitchen scales (to track healthy growth)
- Miracle Ni***es (for safe, gentle feeding)

It’s National Volunteer Week, and we’re feeling ALL the gratitude. Every day, we’re humbled by the incredible people who give their time, talents, and resources to support the animals at ASCMV. From those who show up in person to those who support from afar... thank you. 💛

To our dog walkers, playgroup wranglers, enrichment champions (sniffari walks and treat-stuffed toys!), cat cuddlers, office greeters, laundry heroes, event volunteers, photographers, and beyond… YOU are the heartbeat of our work.

The City of Las Cruces is proud to support the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley (ASCMV) as they celebrate with FREE adoptions from April 21 through April 30 for all pets who are already spayed or neutered!

Some of these pets have been at the shelter for hundreds of days—growing up there or simply waiting for their next forever home. They’re full of love, personality, and charm. These weekend sleepovers help dogs decompress, build confidence, and show us how they thrive in a home environment, making it easier to match them with their perfect family. 🏡✨
