She said it loud enough that two other competitors heard it. She said it the way people say things they've decided they mean — not casually, not accidentally. She said that horse is too much for you and everyone in this arena can see it. I was twenty-three and I had been riding this horse for fourteen months and I had been working harder at it than I had worked at anything in my life and I heard her say that and something happened in me that I want to describe accurately. I didn't cry. I didn't argue. I felt something go very still and very clear in my chest like a decision had just been made without me having to think about it. I went to the warm-up pen. I got quiet. I focused on one thing — the quality of my connection with my horse in the next ninety seconds — and I went through that gate. The run was the second fastest of my season. I placed. She was still at the rail when I came out. I did not look at her. Not because I was above it — because I had already used everything she'd given me and I was done with the transaction. Mean people at shows are information. They tell you what they're afraid of seeing you become. Use the information. Don't carry the person. 🐴🔥
