Riverside Veterinary Hospital was founded in 1978 with a purpose to provide the best possible care to pets and piece of mind to their owners. Dr. Charles Harris, who purchased the hospital in 1979 and is a graduate of Auburn University, and a current member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) as well as the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association (Alabama VMA) and East Alabama Vet

🐾 Happy Father's Day to all the amazing pet dads! 🐾

Today, we celebrate the men who never hesitate to toss the ball one more time, share their favorite chair, wake up early for walks, and provide endless love and care to their furry family members.

Whether you're a dog dad, cat dad, horse dad, or care for any beloved companion, thank you for the dedication, patience, and affection you give every day. Your pets may not be able to say it, but they appreciate everything you do.

🌧️☀️ Just because we've had rain lately doesn't mean the heat isn't dangerous!

As temperatures continue to rise, pets can still be at risk for heatstroke—even on cloudy or humid days. Dogs, cats, and other animals can overheat quickly, especially when exercising outdoors, spending time in poorly ventilated areas, or being left in vehicles.

🚨 Signs of heatstroke in pets include:
• Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
• Drooling more than usual
• Bright red or pale gums
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Stumbling or loss of coordination
• Collapse or seizures

💧 Help keep your pets safe by providing plenty of fresh water, limiting outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and ensuring they have access to shade or air conditioning.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and contact your veterinarian right away. Heatstroke is a medical emergency and can become life-threatening very quickly.

Everybody put on your party hats and say a big congratulations to our girl, Bucket! She’s officially one whole pound today! Bucket was abandoned to us as a two week old kitten weighing 6 ounces and with a severely infected leg. A few of our staff members have taken turns allowing Bucket into our families, medicating and bottle feeding her, and teaching her how to be a kitten. Her leg now looks fantastic and she’s growing like a w**d. For her next trick, she’ll be learning how to use a litter box! 🎉🎉🎉
