Frustration often causes unwanted behaviour.
However it is often a cry for clarity and not more "control" by us.
When they can't access what they want....toys, other dogs or even the chance to run, it causes dogs frustration.
Are we really looking at ways to address that or just wanting "obedience"....because that frustration must be addressed.

Crates.
Used well...they're helpful.
Used too much....a major cause of frustration.

Even a lead can cause frustration.
Leash reactive dog anyone?

Autonomy.....we don't look at this enough.
A dog needs to have choice.
We just need to guide that choice appropriately.
They can start to show great decisions.
We can trust them more in situations because of those good decisions.

That frustration starts to drop away.

Add in enrichment and sharpen those "sometimes rules". ..... watch what happens.

We all know a heavy pant can tell us a dog is uncomfortable.
What about a mouth that isn't panting?
Can something as simple as a mouth closing show a dog that is experiencing anxiousness?
Absolutely...but as always, it needs context.

Generally speaking (and that's a big sweeping generalisation there)... dogs that are more relaxed tend to have an open mouth.
Did you notice it shut firmly?
Maybe when that loud car drove past?

What about that panting?
If it is heavier and combined with a "spoon" tongue that is darker or pinker than usual....they may be under stress.

Not all stress is bad though!
Physical exertion and having a run around in a field can produce that scooped tongue and panting.....but if it's at other times?

That may need an extra looksie.

The trust that we hold in our dogs must be advocated for. Forced on leash (and off leash, of course) greetings never yield the desired result. Most noticeably, a dog attack results from either dog. One recoiling and not wanting the interaction at that time may snap at or bite the other, more intrusive dog. Or the intrusive dog bites the dog who is recoiling. The less noticeable trauma of the event that results from a forced greeting is the newly formed negative experience and negative associations the dog that was recoiling carries with him. If not immediately addressed, will lead to a variety of issues beyond adolescents. A few examples are dog aggression, fear of "the outside" or public places, developing more defensive behaviors at home, etc.
Please advocate for your dogs space and remember, there is NO RULE that states your dog must greet and love every dog.
