🎄🐴 Christmas Cheer in the Arena 🐴🎄

The holiday season has brought plenty of festive fun to the arena! Our students have been enjoying Christmas-themed lessons filled with laughter, learning, and lots of cheer — from walk-and-whoa games set to holiday music, to scavenger hunts for inflatable candy cane rings and category games using the dressage letters around the ring.

Horses and team members joined in the fun too, sporting Santa hats, antlers, and bows. And one especially sweet moment came when a student’s Christmas wish came true: she got to ride a new horse she’d had her eye on, who made his appearance with a big red bow and an instant connection. She was absolutely over the moon — and the pairing couldn’t have been better. ❤️

These moments of joy are about more than just celebrating the season. They’re part of how confidence, courage, and connection grow — one stride, and one smile, at a time.

💙🎄🐴 One Week Until Christmas: Here’s a Fun Holiday Horse History Lesson! 🐴🎄💙

With Christmas just around the corner, we’re celebrating with a little holiday horse trivia — because horses have been part of winter traditions long before jingling reindeer ever took the spotlight!

🎶 1. “Jingle Bells” was inspired by real sleigh rides.
The song we all know was originally published as “The One Horse Open Sleigh.” And those jingling bells? They weren’t just for cheer — sleigh bells helped people hear a horse-drawn sleigh gliding silently over snowy roads.

📬 2. Horses once delivered Christmas letters and gifts.
Before trucks and paved roads, horses and horse-drawn wagons carried much of the holiday mail — even through tough winter storms. If a Christmas card or parcel made it to a rural home in the 1800s, chances are a horse got it there.

✨ 3. There’s an old European Christmas legend that at midnight on Christmas Eve, animals are granted a special grace: they either gain the gift of speech or kneel in reverence to honor the birth of Christ. While the Bible doesn’t mention animals speaking or kneeling, this tradition grew from ancient folklore and Christmas storytelling across parts of Europe, where farm animals—including horses—were imagined joining in awe of the Nativity night.

Horses have always had a way of bringing people together — in history, in tradition, and here at GMTRC every single day. 💙🐴

Moments of Transformation Happen Here.

Every breakthrough looks a little different at GMTRC — sometimes it’s a new skill, sometimes it’s a spark of confidence… and sometimes it’s something far deeper. One long-time volunteer recently reflected on a student whose journey unfolded slowly over years of adaptive riding. What began as quiet, non-verbal participation eventually grew into meaningful communication — a milestone that left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

Stories like these remind us that equine-assisted services reach well beyond the arena. Horses inspire motivation, connection, and courage in ways that open new pathways for growth — one stride, one lesson, one relationship at a time.

If you’d like to be part of these moments of hope and possibility, we’d love to welcome you to our volunteer team. 💚

💙🐴 Happy National Day of the Horse! 🐴💙

Today we celebrate the gentle giants at the heart of GMTRC — our incredible herd. Each horse brings something unique to our barn community: steady strength, patient presence, quiet confidence, playful curiosity, or the simple gift of showing up just as they are.

Every day, our horses help students discover new abilities, build trust, practice courage, and experience joy in motion. They listen without judgment, respond with honesty, and create the kind of connection that can’t be taught — only felt.

From quiet moments in the barn to the energy of lesson days, these horses enrich countless lives through their partnership and presence. And today, we’re giving out a few extra treats and pets to show just how grateful we are for all they do. 💙

If you have a favorite GMTRC horse memory or photo, share it in the comments — we’d love to celebrate with you!

❄️🐴 With winter settling in, have you ever wondered how we keep our herd cozy during turnout? Here’s a fun, behind-the-scenes look at our blanketing system!

First, many people are surprised to learn that horses naturally grow incredible winter coats — thick enough to trap warm air close to their bodies. These coats are so effective that many horses don’t need heavy blankets at all.

But here’s the catch: that natural insulation only works when their coats stay dry and fluffed. If a horse gets drenched by cold rain, sleet, or heavy snow, the hair can’t trap heat — and that’s when a waterproof blanket becomes important.

In the wild, horses are naturally adapted to harsh climates and grow thick winter coats to protect themselves. Domestic horses, however, don’t develop the same level of natural protection due to shelter, management, and selective breeding, so they rely more on blankets during cold, wet, and windy weather.

That’s why we check our herd daily and adjust blankets based on temperature, moisture, wind, and each horse’s individual coat. Some days that means a rain sheet, some days a light blanket, and on the coldest days, a warm heavyweight!

This approach allows our horses to enjoy as much time outside as possible — free to graze, move, and “horse around!” We’re also grateful for a facility where we can stall them overnight if needed.

No matter what winter brings, we’re keeping our herd healthy, happy, and ready to shine in every lesson. 💙🐴

💚🐴 Silver Saddles Session 2 Wrap-Up! 🐴💚

It’s hard to believe it’s been two weeks since we wrapped up Silver Saddles 2 — and what an incredible four weeks it was! With a close-knit group of six participants, the indoor arena became a warm, focused space where confidence grew quietly — and then blossomed boldly. Under the guidance of Deb and Linda, each participant explored new horsemanship skills including lunging on a circle, connection work at liberty, and sidestepping.

Many of the ladies began unsure they could complete the tasks ahead… but every single one experienced meaningful breakthroughs. One participant who struggled to back her horse — let alone send him out on a circle — finished the program with a soft, connected partnership. Her horse responded to her light cues with trust and willingness… even circling at a trot! Moments like these filled the arena with pride and joy.

During the final week, participants rotated through a series of stations to put their skills into practice, and they conquered every one of them. By the end, each person reflected on how surprised — and deeply proud — they were of their growth.

To everyone who joined us: thank you for showing up with courage, heart, and openness. Your progress speaks volumes, and we’re honored to walk alongside you in this journey. 💚

💚🐴 Happy International Volunteer Day! 🐴💚

If you’ve ever watched a lesson at GMTRC, you’ve seen something remarkable: volunteers quietly creating the conditions for growth, confidence, and joy.

You’ll see a volunteer walking beside a mounted student, matching their pace stride for stride, celebrating a moment of balance that took weeks to build. You’ll see another speaking softly to a horse, helping them stay calm and focused so a new skill can be learned safely. And in the barn, you might catch someone early in the morning sweeping the aisle, filling water buckets, or offering an encouraging word to a student before their lesson begins.

These moments seem small — but they are the backbone of adaptive horsemanship.
They’re how trust is built, how courage grows, and how every student is supported in ways that honor their abilities and goals.

Today, we honor all the volunteers who bring steady hands, patient hearts, and joyful energy to our barn community. Your care makes transformation possible. We are deeply, truly grateful.

💚 Help us celebrate: share a thank-you or story below about a volunteer who’s made a difference in your journey at GMTRC.

💚🐴 Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Diane! 💚🐴

If you’ve spent any time at GMTRC, you’ve likely felt the ripple of Diane’s steady kindness, deep commitment, and quiet leadership. She’s one of those volunteers whose presence brings a sense of calm, competence, and connection to every corner of the barn — whether she’s leading a horse in a lesson, caring for the herd, supporting special events, or stepping in wherever she’s needed most.

For Diane, volunteering isn’t just service — it’s community, purpose, and joy. In her survey answers, she shares what keeps her coming back year after year: celebrating student milestones, working alongside a team that feels like family, learning natural horsemanship, and cherishing all the little horse moments that make barn life meaningful (and often very funny!).

We’re so grateful for Diane — for her heart, her dedication, and the way she helps every student, volunteer, and horse feel supported and seen. The GMTRC family is better because she’s part of it. 💚

🧡🐴 Happy Thanksgiving from GMTRC! 🐴🧡

Today we’re reflecting on the power of gratitude — something so integral to the work we do here. Research tells us that practicing gratitude strengthens resilience, boosts emotional and even physical well-being, and helps us notice life-giving moments and good things around us. At GMTRC, we see those benefits take shape in real moments: a student's smile after a breakthrough, a volunteer offering steady, heartfelt support, a horse responding with quiet trust.

We are deeply grateful for our students and their courage, our families, volunteers, dedicated staff, generous donors, and our incredible herd. Each of you helps create a place where people grow in confidence, connection, and joy — one stride at a time.

From our barn to your home, we wish you a restful, joy-filled Thanksgiving. 🧡
Share something you’re grateful for at GMTRC in the comments — we’d love to hear from you.

THANK YOU, GMTRC family! 💛🐴

Because of your incredible generosity, encouragement, and enthusiasm, we raised an astounding $28,000 during this year’s ExtraGive. We’re blown away!

You surpassed our goals not once… not twice… but three times, lifting our students, volunteers, horses, and staff with your unwavering support. Every gift helps us continue providing life-changing adaptive horsemanship lessons and community programs that strengthen bodies, minds, and hearts.

And yes—Geym may have won the friendly barn race (and she’s pleased as punch!), but truly… we all won because of you. 💛

From all of us at GMTRC:
Thank you for giving. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for believing in our mission.
We’re honored to walk this journey with you.
