Want a good duck dog? Here’s 3 key steps to follow.
1. Buy from a good pedigree that proves “I know how to pick up a duck”. If a breeder says the mom and dad hunted but there isnt a single hunt test/field trial title for 3+ generations that is NOT what you’re looking for. If you do not know what to look for in a pedigree seek professional advice. I guarantee there is a well bred puppy within a days drive of you if you know where to look.
2. Get going on a good puppy program early on. It’s a proven facts that puppy’s brains go through explosive growth between week 8 and 16. Use this time to introduce your pup to its life work. If you cannot or are unwilling to do this seek professional help.
3. Find a good mentor or trainer. Theres a lot of great trainers out there, get out there and go watch them train. Check out their facility. Look them up online at retriever results or entry express. See how many dogs they passed/titled. The proof is in the pudding and the information is out there.
