One of my favorite nights from the city I can’t wait to get back to.

It was October of 1988, I was 21, a beautiful fall night in NYC. Me and the boys were hanging out in the park blasting our heavy metal music. All of a sudden one of our buddies comes running into the park saying OMG you will never guess who is at Waldbaums park(4 blocks from our park). He tells us it’s Dee Snider(my idol as a young teenager) and Howard Stern(always hated him). Of course we did not believe our friend Slanty(gave him that nickname cause he was always bumping into things, Cosmo Kramer if you will).

We decided to run to Waldbaums park and low and behold Slanty was telling the truth. There was Dee and Howard with a camera crew. It turns out Dee was filming a video for Hot Love, one of the tracks off The Love is for Suckers album. When he saw us coming he stopped the shooting and greeted us warmly. I told him how he was my idol as a young boy and the profound impact his lyrics and music had on me. He was very touched and what he did next showed that my idol was truly who I thought he was.

Howard at this point was pi**ed and asked Dee if they could get back to the shooting. Dee said no man my fans are here, we will pick this up another night. Howard was like F-CK you and your fans, gave us the finger and left. No big loss. Dee however not only sent the camera crew home but he also spent 90 minutes on a park bench talking to us. He was so sweet, down to earth , nice and enjoying the entire time almost as much as we were. He was so deeply touched to hear me tell him how much he and his music meant to me, and the fact that we both had Astoria roots. Dee grew up on Long Island but was born in Astoria where I lived for 43 years.

6 years ago for my 52nd birthday my wife reached out to have him do a Cameo for me. Not only did my idol do a great job on the cameo for me which I’m sharing here but you could tell he remembered that night. Thank you Dee for being such a great dude.

It was 10 years ago today that we rescued our precious little boy Winston from AAC. He was about to be put down, as he had a fever of 106, over 300 ticks on him, 2 upper respiratory infections, 2 tick infections, anemia, and severely emaciated at 51 lbs. He was so weak he could barely stand. They did not think he had 24 hours left.

What they did not understand is that he was about to be introduced to The Power of Love. After rushing him to the vet, we took him home and gave him a comfortable bed and very warm surroundings. We loved and doted on him constantly and fed him a ton of food to get his weight up. My beautiful wife would pick ticks off of him daily, most of which had finally died, but were still embedded in his skin. He would sit silently and let her, despite still being in pain.

He had never been inside a home the first 2 yrs of his life. This was all new to him and he was constantly worried and scared of whether he was doing the right thing and pleasing us. He kept bumping into walls and was scared of tennis balls and squeaky toys.

That’s when I decided on instinct to bounce the tennis ball around the house and talk to it in the same sweet and loving voice I would use with Winston. I did this with the squeaky toys as well. For the better part of 2 weeks I was talking to tennis balls and squeaky toys as if they were humans. The entire time Winston would observe and look at me thinking his daddy was certifiable.

Well, after 2 weeks this precious little boy could not wait to play with his toys. He would grab his squeaky toys and run around the house with them in his mouth, and then throw them to me so we could play. Winston was starting to come out of his shell, and feeling the true love every dog deserves.

The first 2 pics are how he looked the day we brought him home. The last pic on top was on the 8th day after we had brought him home. He is running in his yard, and that picture is magical because it was the first day he showed any energy. The remaining pics are him through the years.

He is such a wonderful boy and has blessed us with 10 amazing years. We love you Winston, and are so thankful for you our precious little boy.

Happy 12th Birthday to our beautiful and precious little Winston. It’s been almost 10 years now since we rescued you from the brink of death.

When I first saw your picture on the AAC website, I saw those beautiful eyes of yours, and knew you were our boy.

We came down to the shelter to meet you for the first time on that same day, Thursday April 16th 2015. You were so weak, and could barely stand up, covered with a ton of ticks, after you had been abandoned in the middle of nowhere for 6 months. We loved on you for 30 minutes and then went to the front desk to take you home. Unfortunately we were told we had to come back the next day to pick you up, because they had to neuter you.

The next day could not come soon enough. We get a call that morning telling us they would have to put you down because your fever had spiked to 106. They thought we would no longer want you after being told that. It just made us want you even more.

We came as fast as possible to pick you up. We took you to the vet immediately. She said the next 24 hours would be crucial.

There was no doubt in our mind you would make it little boy. We brought you home, and when you first entered our home, which turned out to be the first time in your life you had been inside a house you got scared by Judge Judy yelling on TV. 😂 Even humans get scared of her. You then noticed the bed we had for you covered with a sheet on the floor and collapsed on it.

It took a month for you to recover, and you kept bumping into walls, and did not speak to us for a month, as you were not sure of your situation.

We gave you tons of love daily and a ton of food to combat your emaciated state. Then one morning about a month after we had brought you home you finally found your voice and started howling. It was so adorable we started howling with you.

In the 10 years since, you have blessed us so much with your beauty, heart, and spirit, and taught us so much.

Thank you so much for fighting so hard those 6 months, and for having the strength, resolve, and hope to survive until our paths crossed. You are a great example of why dogs are gods greatest creation and gift to us all.
We love you so much Winston!
