Fireworks can be scary for horses. If your horse has a history of reacting to fireworks you can try the following:
🐴 Keep the horse in a stall that they cannot jump out of.
🐴 Work the horse in a way that it is accustomed to a few hours before the fireworks. This can help to decrease reactivity due to excess energy.
🐴 Give the horse electrolytes a few hours prior to the fireworks. This can help to increase hydration and decrease colic risk.
🐴 Earplugs for horses can help if your horse is sensitive to the sounds that fireworks make.
🐴 Some people have had success leaving a radio playing during the firework display.
🐴 Especially sensitive horses or horses with a history of bad reactions to fireworks may benefit from anti-anxiety or sedation medications. These can be prescribed by a veterinarian in appropriate circumstances.
