Meet your veterinarian: Dr. Jessica Stokes was born and raised in Lakeside, CA where she showed horses and competed in hunter/jumper, team penning, and western riding. She loved, and still enjoys, riding the San Diego riverbed trails. Dr. Stokes graduated from UC Davis with her bachelor’s in animal science and her master’s in immunology. She earned her Veterinary Medicine Degree from Oklahoma State University. Her work took her to New Mexico and Texas where she continued to hone her skills in general equine medicine. Dr. Stokes came back to Lakeside, where her childhood dream of becoming an equine veterinarian started, and has been practicing here since 2010.

With over 15 years of experience and special interest in chiropractics and routine/preventative care, Dr. Stokes is dedicated to providing affordable care to all types of horses in San Diego County. She loves treating older horses, allowing them to enjoy their golden years in comfort. She finds her work as an equine veterinarian very rewarding and can’t imagine doing anything else with her life.

Dr. Stokes lives in Lakeside with her 2 Dogs, 5 Horses and her two amazing kids. Her hobbies include riding horses, doing jiu jitsu, and learning new innovative ways to improve the lives of her equine friends.

Fireworks can be scary for horses. If your horse has a history of reacting to fireworks you can try the following:
🐴 Keep the horse in a stall that they cannot jump out of.
🐴 Work the horse in a way that it is accustomed to a few hours before the fireworks. This can help to decrease reactivity due to excess energy.
🐴 Give the horse electrolytes a few hours prior to the fireworks. This can help to increase hydration and decrease colic risk.
🐴 Earplugs for horses can help if your horse is sensitive to the sounds that fireworks make.
🐴 Some people have had success leaving a radio playing during the firework display.
🐴 Especially sensitive horses or horses with a history of bad reactions to fireworks may benefit from anti-anxiety or sedation medications. These can be prescribed by a veterinarian in appropriate circumstances.

Happy First Day of Summer! Remember, a scoop of electrolytes and free access to fresh water every day keeps the equine vet away!

Best way to give electrolytes is by providing a salt block or, if your horse won’t use it, giving electrolytes in their feed. Horses are heat stressed any time it is above 85°. On hot days electrolytes are especially important.

Keep an eye out for signs of overheat or colic, which can include an elevated temperature (above 101.5 F), a decrease in manure production, water or food consumption and call our office with any questions, concerns, or in case of an emergency (619) 922-7568

As summer quickly approaches, here are some tips to help keep your equine friends happy and healthy during the hottest time of the year.

The summer heat and sun won't be letting up any time soon, so make sure your equine friends are adequately protected from harmful UV rays. ☀️

Hot summer weather puts horses at risk not only for dehydration and heat stress but also the skin damage and discomfort that accompany a sunburn— just like humans.

A lot of equestrians love some chrome on a horse, but it's important to remember that those beautiful white markings and the non-pigmented pink skin underneath are more likely to suffer from sunburn, especially in areas where the skin is more sensitive — like around the eyes and the nostrils.

In addition to the pain and discomfort, horses that are prone to recurrent sunburn may also face other long-term consequences, like the increased likelihood of developing squamous cell carcinoma (a common cancer).

If your horse is susceptible to sunburn, contact your veterinarian for more information about sun damage and recommendations to keep your horse protected this summer.
