Just some info that might help people choose the right trainer with credentials and some red flags to watch for when choosing a trainer.

-Price high or low doesn’t equal a good trainer or bad trainer it’s just what they think their time is worth.

-Nice facility doesn’t equal a good or bad trainer they may be good business person but not so good of a trainer.

-Trainers that never compete against other trainers but they say that it is just a sport. It’s a proving ground where other top trainers judge you against your peers in the same field without lures or collars in most cases with the biggest impulse control most dogs will experience. Impulse control is one of the number one reasons lots of clients reach out to us. Someone can be a good pet dog trainer without competing but it’s been very rare experience in my 25 years of doing this. The best dog trainers I have ever meet were and still are very competitive in a sport.

-Trainer that is taking your money to help you get somewhere but that can’t get themselves there. It has happened even with me one of my clients achieved higher success than I have been but again it’s very rare you see that.

-Trainers that do more talking than actually fixing your dog. There are lots of trainers today that can talk a good scientific approach but they lack the yrs of hands on experience to put into real life.

-Trainers that don’t believe in any science or reward system. They got left behind because they were too lazy to do more studying so they make comments like we don’t use food or toys.

-Trainers that think they are positive only trainers. Thats a system that has holes if it was possible to actually get reliable results in any environment with many different types of dogs I would do it myself but it falls short.

-Trainer that is against any type of collar and judgmental. It just shows their lack of understanding of that tool.

-Trainers that tell you how good they are by just showing you a demo with their dog but have no trophies or titles to back that up in a sport where they competed against other top trainers. The problem with just a demo dog to a novice client is even basic stuff looks impressive.

-This trainer is closer so I will go with them. Sometimes once a month training is better than 3 times a week with some trainers.

In the end it’s your money and your choice but I just wanted to give some information about choosing a trainer that best fits your needs. No trainer is the best at everything no matter what they tell you but there are trainers that are much better than others. There are no absolutes in my personal experiences just like there no absolutes in dog training just sharing some of my experience to help you decide. There is a reason our slogan says “Not all dog training is created equal”. Hope my experience will help someone somewhere. Have a great day!!
