While I hope everyone chooses us for their next puppy, I see far too many people lose money to scams. We’re an IaPBA member and have added the Verified Member card to our website. If you’re looking at another breeder, it’s a good idea to see whether they have one too.
The way customers evaluate breeders online is changing fast.
For years, good photography and a clean website helped legitimate breeders stand out. That still matters—but it’s no longer enough. With AI, convincing websites, puppy photos, and online listings can now be generated in minutes. What once took years to build can be imitated almost instantly.
Each year, more customers rely almost entirely on online impressions when choosing a breeder. At the same time, it’s becoming harder to tell what’s genuine just by looking. As these tools improve, appearances alone are no longer a reliable way for customers to know who they’re dealing with.
That’s why the Iowa Pet Breeders Association is rolling out a Verified Member card for our members.
This is not a certification, inspection, or enforcement program. It’s a simple, practical tool tied directly to current IaPBA membership—designed to give customers one more clear reference point beyond visuals alone.
Here’s what the Verified Member card does:
Each member receives a personalized card through our membership system
The card reflects current IaPBA membership and includes an expiration date
Members may display the card on their website, in their pickup area, or share it directly with customers
Members who are more tech-savvy may also link the card image to their IaPBA member profile (linking is optional)
This card isn’t meant to replace the many ways breeders already build credibility—such as maintaining a professional website, using clear and honest photos, staying properly licensed, and communicating openly with customers. Instead, it’s one more way to add clarity in an online environment where evaluation has become more difficult.
As the landscape continues to change, the mission of the IaPBA remains the same: to add value for Iowa breeders and help the public make informed decisions. The Verified Member card is one small, practical step in support of that goal.
