The Skippy J. Story
When Skippy became paralyzed, his first family put him out on the curb with the garbage. He was rescued and taken to a vet who decided surgery was not an option for him. He had such a sweet spirit, though, so the rescue group bought him a doggy wheelchair and took care of him for almost 3 years. When I first saw Skippy on Petfinder I knew he was the dog for me! Arrangements wer

e made and Skippy moved halfway across the country to Atlanta, GA. After a lot of practice (and a lot of mistakes!) I learned how to care for his special needs. Since he couldn't go potty on his own, we developed a routine to express his bladder and bowels. Easy Peasy! We started attending dachshund events participating in wheelie races and costume contests. Skippy was a natural charmer and made friends everywhere we went. We shared his story with anyone who wanted to know about life with a paralyzed dog. We worked in IVDD information booths to educate dog parents about preventing, treating, and living with this disease. Skippy lived 12 of his 15 years on wheels, and he never let it slow him down! Covenant Pet Trust started the Skippy J. Fund to help other dog parents who need assistance getting wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment for their special needs pets. So many people helped Skippy and me along the way, and I am honored that this fund was created in his name. Skippy continues to work his magic from over the Rainbow Bridge!

Happy "SPECIALLY-ABLED PETS DAY!"

We can learn a lot from these incredible souls—They don't complain about their lot in life, they take everything in stride, they adapt as well as they can, they're not ashamed of their uniqueness. They find the joy in life!

Consider adopting a disabled pet with special needs if you have the time, energy, financial resources and are willing to learn new skills. While pets with disabilities require additional care, time and special accommodations, they bring indescribable joy into our lives and teach us many valuable lessons.

Meet Adalaide she is a rescue dog from Boxer rescue. She came from south Florida.
She was not able to walk when she came and she still is not able to walk. Covenant Pet Trust Donated a wheel chair for her. Watch the video she is so happy!
