Welcome to Weight loss Wednesday!
For the next FOUR weeks we will be highlighting our weight loss champions... Jambo, Loki, Kalista and Little Girl, who between the four of them, have lost a total of 17 pounds so far! Say what???
A cat who weighs 10-20% more than their ideal body weight is considered overweight, and obese when they are more than 20% over. In North America, obesity is the most preventable disease in cats, with an estimated 61% of cats being overweight (and 59% of dogs).
It's not easy for a cat to lose weight, but it's especially difficult when they are senior cats in a community feeding setting. But it was important for us to address each of their situations because of health effects including arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and a weakened immune system.
