There was a cat, Jenny, who was one of the Titanic’s cat. She had her kittens onboard in Belfast. But when they got to the stop before heading to New York, she took her kittens off the boat and did not get back on.
You can read about her below...or by googling cat on Titanic.
Perhaps, that’s what this picture by artist Celia Pike, is of...Jenny and her babies watching the last sailing of the Titanic.

Artist: Celia Pike

The Titanic Cat - Jenny's Story
In the wee hours of the morning between April 14th and April 15th 1912 the queen of the White Star Line, the unsinkable Titanic, did indeed sink into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland. Countless human and animal lives were lost, but what about Jenny, the Titanic cat?

As the story goes …
Jenny was brought aboard the Titanic from her sister ship, the Olympia, to act as mascot and to help with the rodent control. She lived in the underbelly of the ship (or the kitchen depending on which story you read) and was tended to by a stoker named Jim Mulholland. He would frequently sneak table scraps for her.

Work was difficult to find in those days and Jim Mulholland had been temporary help on the Titanic during the ship’s sailing trials from the Irish Sea to Southampton. When he was offered a full time position for the Titanic’s maiden voyage to New York he was thrilled to have the employment.

During those sailing trials, about a week before the Titanic moored in Southampton, Jenny presented Jim and the Titanic with a litter of kittens. Jim made Jenny a comfortable spot where she could tend to her kittens. Looking after the mama cat and her kittens broke the monotony of Jim’s work. Jenny seemed content with her warm spot by the furnaces, her babies and her kitchen scraps from Jim.

However, as soon as the ship docked at Southampton Jenny had a good look at her surroundings and promptly started picking her kittens up by the scruff of their necks and moving them, one by one, down the gangplank and off the ship.

Jim watched her curiously and decided that this cat must know something that no one else knows!

He promptly packed his meagre belongings and departed the ship himself.

Truth or Titanic legend? Some other reports have Jenny and her kittens perishing with the Titanic, but the cat lover in me … I like Jim Mulholland’s story so I vote truth!

Years later the Irish Times ran Jenny’s story after a reporter spoke to an elderly man who related the tale. Was he Jim Mulholland himself or just someone with whom Jim shared his story? We may never know. A Daily Mirror edition from April of 1912 ran an article with the headline “Clever Mother Cat Saves Her Kittens from the Titanic” accompanied with the following picture. Is this Jenny’s litter? Again, we may never know.

We are all so thankful for our wonderful clients and patients! Dr. Whitlow and the entire staff at Four Paws Animal Hospital hope you all had a very Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 and were able to spend time with the ones you love! 🐾🐾 💛

We hope none of your pets were able to help out with garbage detail like this guy. It’s obviously not a good idea…

We have a lot of fur babies spending the holiday with us, and we want to thank our employees that took time out of their holiday to come in to work and care for them. Thank you Amanda, JP, Lacie, Riley, Chase and Katie. Your dedication is appreciated!

National Vet Tech Week 2023 cannot come and go without letting our techs know how much we APPRECIATE and value them! 💛 It may look in most of these pictures like they are having a lot of fun, but they work REALLY hard (EVERYONE in the clinic does - and we APPRECIATE them ALL!). They not only get puppy kisses and kitten purrs, but sometimes they get peed on, even pooped on and sometimes if they don't move fast enough they even get bit - (it happens occasionally unfortunately) - (😿 sorry...). They go home and find toenails in the pockets of their scrub shirts, they leave their work shoes OUTSIDE (they sometimes don't smell too great and they don't want to bring anything in to their own pets). Their hearts break with every passing fur baby, even tho it may not technically be their own pet, and is healed a little with each new puppy or kitten that they get to spend time caring for... they get attached to them too. So, we hope you will join us in saying Thank You to Taylor, Amanda and Dawn (and Dr. Whitlows wife, Laura). It's a job you gotta love in order to do it - and they do! 💛💛💛🐾🐾🐕🐈‍⬛🐕‍🦺🐈

We are deeply saddened to have to announce the passing of Dr. Bryan Murphy. It has been some years since he has been a constant at Four Paws and some of you may unfortunately not have ever met him. Dr. Murphy was a relief doctor that turned into a continuous Wednesday break for Dr. Whitlow for a few years BC (before Covid). Dr. Murphy was so full of life, so full of laughter and kindness, he had the ability to connect with anyone he met. He loved being a veterinarian, tho we know he loved his wife and family above that. We are so fortunate to have known him, he touched the lives of so many through his dedication and love of animals. He helped us out so much at Four Paws, educating clients, educating our staff, sharing his knowledge and wisdom. Dr. Murphy was actually a classmate of Dr. Whitlow’s at Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine, they graduated together in 1988. After owning his own practice down in Fort Walton, he moved back up to the Auburn /Opelika area where he worked for several different veterinary clinics in the area. Outside of his career, Dr. Murphy loved working in his garden, which is what he was doing when he passed suddenly. He will truly be missed by so many. A great veterinarian, a great man.

Dr. Whitlow will be out of the office for a few hours Monday, July 17th to attend his memorial service. We appreciate the understanding of those whose appointments had to be adjusted to allow for this. 💛🐾🐾

Summertime… the sun, the pool, vacation, no school. What could be better? How about being able to feed your pet outdoors without them having ants 🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜 in their food? It IS possible, and here’s how... take a frisbee (or some similar type object) that is slightly larger than the food bowl, turn it over and fill it full of water. Put it on the ground and place the bowl full of food in the center of it. NO MORE ANTS 🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜! At least not in their food. (Sorry, we don’t have the solution for keeping them away from YOUR picnic… maybe have YOUR picnic IN a pool?! LOL) - hope this helps! Enjoy! 😉😸💛🐾🐾 (Happily demonstrated by Diego!)
