Spoon River Cattle Company We are a cow/calf operation in the Cuchara Valley. We also train our own horses, specializing in ranch horses and cow horses.

The goal is to raise quality high altitude cattle and train all around equine athletes both in and out of the arena.

During The Run For A Million Cow Horse Challenge presented by Teton Ridge, Koch, who rode Smart Ladies Sparkle owned by XIT Ranch, reached the prestigious milestone.

Matt Koch started his journey to reined cow horse on an internship with Equistat $10 Million Dollar rider, Lloyd Cox. Jamie Snyder, Justin Pinney, and Ronald Cameron and a few others were at Lloydโ€™s as well and Koch learned from them too. Koch went on to work for Robbie Boyce for a time and managed some ranches along the way. Koch spent about 4 years for the Haythorns at Wagonhound and was given the opportunity to train and show for them.

Smart Ladies Sparkle was bred by American Quarter Horse Association Best Remuda winner Wagonhound Land & Livestock LLC of Douglas, Wyoming, and is by leading sire WR This Cats Smart and out of the Shining Spark mare Shiners Diamond Lady.
She is a full sister to Shiners Diamond Cat, 2018 National Reined Cow Horse Association NRCHA Derby Open Champion with Justin Wright in the saddle.

We spent our Sunday gathering pairs off some of our lease ground. With plenty of grass left for next year and the calves looking great, Iโ€™d say it was a successful summer for this set of cows.

It is a very RARE occasion that I decide to sell one my good ones. I never thought Pete would leave my barn, but he deserves to be used to his full potential and I want nothing more for him than to go spend every day doing what he loves instead of sitting on the back burner at my place. With that being said, he is casually FOR SALE. This horse means the world to me, so I will 100% vet any buyer that calls and if youโ€™re not willing to answer a few questions, itโ€™s an automatic red flag for me.

TEQUES DUN DIRTY aka โ€œPeteโ€ is a flashy 5 yr old dunskin AQHA gelding, grandson of Palo Duro Cat (own son of High Brow Cat), also going back to Smart Little Lena on the top side as well as High Brow Hickory and Doc Bar on the bottom side. He has been used extensively on the ranch to gather cattle, brand, tag calves, doctor, sort, and much more. He has also been lightly shown in Ranch Horse Versatility including ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch cutting, and boxing. He is tracking the roping sled on the heel side and has started tracking some live cattle out of the box. He was used at a rodeo bible camp for a young boy that had only been riding for a little while. He stands 14.3 hands and weighs 1,000. Had his teeth and new set of shoes done 7/15/22. He had a soundness exam done 6/22 and Current X-rays then as well. Loads, unloads, stands for farrier, stands to be bathed. He is the top dog around other horses, especially around feed time. Easy keeper and requires no maintenance.

He would make a great heel/breakaway prospect or take him on in the ranch horse versatility. I can see him prospering in any direction you point him.
