Spaying or neutering your pet is one of the most impactful health decisions you can make for them and it goes beyond population control.

For female pets, spaying before the first heat cycle significantly reduces the risk of mammary tumors and eliminates the risk of uterine infections (pyometra), which can be life-threatening.

For male pets, neutering reduces the risk of testicular cancer and certain prostate issues and often improves behavior too.

We know it can feel like a big decision. Our team is here to walk you through the timing, the procedure, and what recovery looks like every step of the way.

☀️ Summer in Southern California is no joke and your pet feels the heat too.

High temps, hot pavement, and increased outdoor activity can take a real toll on dogs and cats. A summer wellness exam is one of the best things you can do right now to make sure your pet is heading into the season in great shape.

Here's what we check for:
🐾 Hydration and coat health
🐾 Parasite prevention (fleas, ticks, and heartworm are at peak risk this time of year)
🐾 Joint and mobility concerns that worsen in heat
🐾 Weight and nutrition — summer activity changes caloric needs

We're right here in La Verne, conveniently located inside Pet Depot — so you can grab supplies and check in with our team in one stop.

Book your summer wellness visit today. Your pet will thank you. 🐶🐱

Summer road trips with pets can be great — or really stressful — depending on how prepared you are. A few things to sort out before you leave: make sure vaccines and parasite prevention are current for wherever you're going (different regions have different risks), pack enough medication if your pet is on anything, bring a copy of their medical records in case you need a vet on the road, and never leave them in a parked car, even for a few minutes. If your pet gets anxious in the car, that's worth addressing before a long drive, not during it. Planning a trip and not sure what your pet needs? A quick pre-travel consult covers everything in one visit. We'll make sure they're ready for the adventure.

Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are not the same thing — and knowing the difference could save your pet's life. Heat exhaustion: heavy panting, drooling, mild lethargy, seeking shade. Move them to a cool area, offer water, and monitor closely. Heatstroke: extreme panting, vomiting, disorientation, collapse, gums that look bright red or pale. This is a medical emergency. Do not wait. Wet them down with cool (not ice cold) water and get to us immediately. Dogs with flat faces (bulldogs, pugs, French bulldogs) and overweight pets are at the highest risk and can overheat faster than you'd expect. In Southern California summers, this can happen in minutes — not hours. When in doubt, treat it as an emergency. We'd rather see you and send you home than have you wait too long.

Summer cookouts are a staple — but your backyard BBQ has more pet hazards than you might think. Here's what to watch for: corn cobs (a leading cause of intestinal blockages), cooked bones (they splinter and can puncture the digestive tract), onions and garlic in marinades and sides (toxic to dogs and cats), grapes and raisins in fruit salads (can cause kidney failure in dogs), and xylitol in sugar-free condiments (extremely toxic, even in small amounts). The safest rule: keep pets away from the food table entirely and make sure guests know not to sneak them scraps. If you suspect your pet ate something they shouldn't have, don't wait to see if symptoms develop — call us right away. Quick action makes a real difference with toxin ingestion.

Did you know dogs and cats can get sunburned? It's more common than most people realize, especially in pets with light-colored fur, pink skin, or thin coats. The most vulnerable spots: the nose, ear tips, belly, and around the eyes. Repeated sun exposure in these areas can lead to painful burns and, over time, increase the risk of skin cancer. If your pet loves lounging in sunny spots or spends time outdoors during peak hours (10am-4pm), it's worth taking precautions. Pet-safe sunscreen exists — and yes, it matters. Human sunscreen contains zinc oxide, which is toxic to pets, so never use it on them. Ask us about safe options at your next visit, or send us a message. Summer sun is great. Sunburned pets are not.
