Wickiup Animal Hospital was able to host another low cost feline spay and neuter clinic on Friday, thanks to our generous sponsor Elanco!

This event was open to outdoor, semi feral, and barn cats. By spaying and neutering them, we aided in not only preventing overpopulation but other potential health issues for these friends.

Thanks to our sponsors, we were able to provide vaccines and microchips as well.

Over half of these cats had fleas, ear mites, and tapeworms. These parasites aren’t just around in the warmer months or in other parts of the state. They are here in Central Oregon year round. We recommend monthly parasite prevention, 12 months of the year because of this.

The first set of baby teeth to erupt in a puppy or kitten are called deciduous teeth. These teeth finish erupting around eight weeks of age, and permanent teeth start coming in from four to six months, and typically have come in by eight months.

Deciduous teeth should fall out on their own to make way for the adult teeth coming in. But what if they don’t fall out?

If by 8 months old, the deciduous teeth have not fallen out properly, they are considered retained.

What happens if these retained deciduous teeth aren’t removed?
- Permanent teeth could erupt in the wrong position.
- Overcrowding in the mouth can be painful.
- Food is more likely to get stuck, leading to periodontal disease and tartar buildup prematurely.
- Deciduous teeth are fragile, they have a high risk of breaking when chewing on hard objects.

These complications can be prevented by extracting the retained deciduous teeth. Due to the typical age we see this issue, retained deciduous teeth can often be removed at the same time as their spay or neuter.

Please give us a call if you feel this could be a concern for your pet.
