Reminders for the 4th of July:

We will be closing at noon on Thursday July 3rd, and won’t be open until Monday July 7th. Make sure to give us a call if you need medications refilled, or your pet needs to be seen before the holiday weekend.

Let’s talk about dental treatment for horses

But what does a dental treatment for horses entail? Why is it so important?

Did you know horses have hypsodont teeth like rabbits? This means they have tall teeth hidden under their gum line that gradually erupt throughout their lifetime. As horses age, they have less tooth available for grinding their food. Proper grinding is critical for proper digestion. If their mouth gets out of balance, horse’s teeth can be worn irregularly with high and low points, as well as sharp edges. These sharp edges can rub against the cheek causing inflammation and pain as seen in the picture above, circled in red.

This is why horse’s teeth need to be regularly balanced with a dental treatment, historically known as floating. Dental treatments are important to maximize the chewing life of their teeth. Not only does keeping their mouth balanced and removing sharp hooks and points make eating more comfortable, but a full oral exam at the time of the dental can detect other issues such as loose or broken teeth, masses, tongue injuries, and other mouth pathology that can be hard to spot until the problem gets worse.

☀️ It’s that time of year! Stop by to pick up your flea, tick, heartworm, and intestinal parasite preventatives. We now carry Credelio Quattro, the all in one monthly parasite control. For those of you who are familiar with Sentinel and Bravecto, this replaces both of those for a more effective, convenient and affordable option.

We will be closed for Memorial day, Monday May 26th. Please give us a call before the three day weekend to request medications, or schedule an appointment. Friday (5/23) will be the last day to pick up medications or food before the holiday weekend.

Dr. Bohard will be out of the office starting at 12:00pm on Tuesday 4/4 and will return to the clinic on 4/8. While Dr. Bohard is gone on Friday 4/4 and Monday 4/7, we will still be open for medication pick ups and scheduling appointments. Please call if you need any medications refilled before the weekend.

While Dr. Bohard is out of office, we will be open regular hours on those days for medication pickups or scheduling questions. Please call us if you need to schedule any appointments for your pets before then. She will be back on Tuesday 3/11.
