We canāt keep up. We have to close for the day, already. In the first 45 minutes of opening, we received 21 dogs and puppies - thatās a dog every two minutes. The puppies are all so hungry, they hoovered up three giant pans of food instantly. We have to close for the day because our staff is completely overwhelmed with intake exams, data entry for all the new dogs, bathing and medical care, and trying to work with dogs to create new friend groups so we can open a kennel or two.
What you can do to help: Adopt. Foster. Volunteer. Donate. But we canāt adopt and transfer our way out of this tidal wave of homeless pets - spaying and neutering is the only way we can stem this tide.
ā¼ļøSpay and neuter at our shelter is FREE ā¼ļøfor our service area (EspaƱola, Rio Arriba County, and the three surrounding Pueblos). The free surgery includes free vaccines and free microchip. Not only does spay/neuter prevent unwanted, homeless litters and helps prevent shelter overcrowding, itās also healthier for your pets - including increasing life expectancy and reducing cancer and infection risks - and pets have much more positive behavior when they are fixed. Call 505-753-8662 ext 112 to schedule. We ask for a *fully refunded* deposit of $20 to hold your appointment, and itās returned when you show up with your pets.
