Can you guess what animal this X-ray belongs to?
The team at Midwest Veterinary Dental Services is all hands on deck for a minimally invasive buccotomy extraction on a horse. Details from the team:
“This specialized surgical technique is utilized when there is minimal or no erupted crown in the mouth, which increases the difficulty of extracting the tooth since there is nothing in the mouth to grasp with an extraction forceps. This mare had a fractured lower premolar that had completely separated the root portion of the tooth from the crown. In order to successfully remove the roots, we needed to approach the tooth through a small incision through the cheek to allow more direct line access to the root structures. As you can see here, each team member had a specific task to help the doctors be able to visualize and successfully remove the tooth. Teamwork makes the dream work!”
