Yesterday while taking the offspring and nieces deep within the wilderness of Bear Creek to collect moss and look at birds and bugs, I got a notification that someone is at my door. At home. I watched for a bit but she wasn't going away. So i turned on the microphone and asked her what's up?
She said, are you missing a chicken? And my heart sinks. I dunno, im not at home. My husband is but im sure he's playing computer games otherwise he'd have answered the door. So i get her address and text him. Luckily I got ahold of him quick, usually it take 3 business days to get his attention if he's gaming. He goes down there (3 houses down!!!) and sure enough there's Duckweed in someone else's yard.
The chickens are now banned from free ranging till we chicken proof the yard a bit more.
8 years of Chicken Keeping and the fall naked necks are my first chickens who jump fences.

Meet Pesto and Marzipan!

They are Valencia Figurita pigeons. One of the smallest variations on the domesticated rock dove (city pigeon).
They were bred in Spain hundreds of years ago, just for showing or pets. Not sure many people want to eat these little things.

They have cute tiny beaks and a weird little frill of sticky outy feathers down the center of their necks.

They were rescued... then kept for a bit in an apartment... you know how this goes.

Id like to be able to keep them outside at least part time. For now id like them to get used to everything and hopefully bond a bit with us. While I dont necessarily want babies, pigeons like chickens need friends so they have to stay together.

Last week our lavender orpington, Dianthus seemed like she was laying around more. Then I noticed her staggering. So inside she came to stay with the silkie babies for a while (thats a whole other story). She wouldn't eat for a bit but seemed to delight in terrorizing the babies. I put extra chicken vitamins in the water and tried to encourage her to eat some hard boiled eggs.
Slowly she began to eat and act more normal. Then we had two days of cold/snow and by the time it warmed back up she seemed ok so out she went with the kids and has been ok since.
This usually isn't how it ends for me when a chicken starts to look sand and tired, but hey ill take it, I like her!

So, first it was me stepping on a nail, then i got sick, coughing and whatnot. The cough lingered too much and got too painful, i thought i had pneumonia again but my xrays were clear. Just as i thought the cough was turning the corner, i fell in the garage, tripped up over all the crap around my car. I hit right under my butt on the wheel of my daughters hoverboard. It was excruciating but i could still walk so i went to work. Afterwards I went to urgent care because the pain was so intense and unrelenting. Nothing broken, just a deep bone contusion of my femur. They told me to take 3 days off work but i only took 1. The pain lessened way faster than i thought it would. But im still not right. And now, unless you've been hiding under a rock you know Colorado is in a drought because it was hot all winter long, well we are getting a spring storm tonight (that i do NOT have high hopes for) but its gonna at least freeze overnight and be cold during the day. So its yet another weekend I cannot do much of the needed stuff in the back yard. At least last weekend I got my roommates to construct this trellis/gate for my mushroom garden.
