Meet Río!

This handsome 6-year-old BLM mustang is here to finish up his gentling and get started under saddle. He's already got a home waiting for him, so he's not available, but you'll still get to follow along as he learns the ropes and prepares for his future with his family.

Looking forward to seeing what this guy accomplishes over the next few months. 🤠

One of my favorite parts of training horses is getting them out into the real world and seeing all their hard work pay off.

This last weekend we loaded up five training horses and headed to Mammoth Cave for a camping trip. For every one of them, it was their very first camping trip, and I couldn't be more proud of how they handled it.

New trails, strange horses, campfires, tents, generators, people coming and going all weekend... and every single horse stepped up to the challenge. They crossed new terrain, settled into camp life, and proved just how much confidence they've gained.

The best part? Several of their owners were able to come join us and ride their horses on the trails. Getting to watch owners enjoy the horses they've been working so hard toward is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

It was a great weekend full of miles, memories, and happy horses. These kinds of experiences are where training really comes together. 🐴🏕️❤️

I have an opening in my c**t starting, restart, or tune-up program for June due to a last-minute cancellation.

Whether your horse needs a solid start under saddle, a fresh set of eyes on some training holes, or a tune-up after some time off, I have one spot available.

Training is tailored to the individual horse, with an emphasis on confidence, understanding, and creating a solid foundation that lasts.

Located in La Grange, KY at Highpointe Training Center. Indoor and outdoor arenas, gallop tracks, and plenty of opportunities for real-world exposure.

Message me for details or to see if your horse would be a good fit.

Getting some trailer practice in with Oz before our camping trip this weekend!

One thing I make a point of doing is walking up to him several times while he's standing in the trailer and then leaving him there. A lot of horses start anticipating the unload process and will begin preparing to leave the second they see you coming. I don't want him thinking my approach is his cue to exit.

I also don't let him just launch himself out the back. I'll ask him to back a couple of steps, stop and wait, then back a few more steps and stop again before coming the rest of the way out.

It might seem like a small thing, but teaching horses to wait for direction instead of making decisions for themselves goes a long way toward safe trailering. The goal isn't just loading. The goal is a horse that loads, unloads, and stands quietly without feeling the need to rush through any part of the process.

Sometimes the human commentary is the best part of the video. 🤣

And yes, the 23-year-old is complaining about his hip. I expect everyone older than him to bully him appropriately in the comments.

Anywayyyyys...

Cisco has been with two trainers before me, which just goes to show that time spent in training and actual training are not always the same thing. 😇

When he arrived, lifting a foot toward the stirrup was enough to convince him we needed to immediately relocate to another zip code. We've been working through a full restart, focusing on helping him understand that a human getting on his back is not, in fact, a life-threatening event.

He's figuring out that mounting isn't scary, and that it's ok to relax and stand still for it.

Now if we could just convince him that mounting blocks aren't planning his demise, we'd really be getting somewhere. 😂 That's next on our to do list.
