It's enjoyable working on animals you don't work on every day.

If you are sitting on fish now is the time to get them in... Once September hits I shift gears to working more on deer and other game animals. Fish brought in after sept 1st have a good chance of sitting in the freezer until the month of March before I touch them.

This large pike had lots of scale damage. This was due to the fish being caught during the ice season. The fish flopped around on the ice all day and then on a 2 1/2 hr drive to my place in the back of a SUV in a sled. The pike was still alive when it arrived at my place, they live forever in the cooler temps. Here is a tip to all the ice fishers to prevent this damage to your trophy. When you land your catch and you know you want to get it mounted, dispatch your fish by cutting a couple gills on it to bleed it out. This will prevent prolonged damage from flopping around when temps are above freezing for the day. The last pic shows all the damaged areas that I lost scales. Luckily I know how to somewhat blend that to hide it for the most part. As you can see in the finished pics.

This may not be the biggest pike. But this mount tells a story and preserves a memory. This old tip-up caught alot of fish in its time. It was once owned by a Grandad passed on down to his Grandson. That sentimental piece is now retired into this mount.
