FEARFUL DOGS It’s June and we are going to look at FEAR … what is fear, why are dogs fearful, how can we recognize it and how can we help our fearful dogs.

Day 13: Fear cannot be reinforced.

Fear is an emotion. Emotions cannot be reinforced like cued behaviors. So, comforting your scared dog will not make him more likely to be scared. On the contrary, comforting a scared dog may help him feel safe. It is okay to comfort your dog.

Whether you need advice on how to help your fearful dog, have concerns about aggressive behavior, are struggling with puppy issues, or just want to set your dog or puppy up for success, I can help. Contact me today at [email protected] or visit my website at https://www.crimsonhound.com .

Contrafreeloading: Because bowls can be boring! 💤

Contrafreeloading is the idea that most animals prefer to work for their food, rather than having it freely available. This idea has been shown across multiple species, including dogs and rats!

We don't want you to interpret this as "all food must be worked for". Instead, we want this post interpreted primarily from an enrichment standpoint. Many pets are understimulated in our homes. Whether it be a lack of appropriate exercise or mental stimulation, or both!

Our pets must live fulfilled lives. This can include having some meals from a bowl, and other meals (or portions of meals) being dedicated to enrichment activities, you keeping food in your pockets to reward desired behaviors, and much more.

FEARFUL DOGS

It’s June and we are going to look at FEAR … what is fear, why are dogs fearful, how can we recognize it and how can we help our fearful dogs.

Day 12: Setting Up For Success

Meet your dog where he is able to cope. If he cannot cope, take a step back, evaluate and then change the environment so that he is able to cope.

Work from a point of Compassion and Empathy.
- Your dog doesn’t want to be afraid. He is acting from a place of instinct and fear, not purposefully. In the moment of panic, his mind reverts to how to stay safe - fight, flight, freeze or fidget.

Advocate for your dog. Tell people not to pet the dog or to leave the dog alone … cross the street if you need to … remove the dog from the situation or remove the trigger … keep his safe space safe.

Be realistic. Set attainable goals and celebrate small victories.

Self care. Living with a fearful dog can be draining. Take care of yourself so that you can take care of your dog … deep breathing, meditation, even counseling.

Whether you need advice on how to help your fearful dog, have concerns about aggressive behavior, are struggling with puppy issues, or just want to set your dog or puppy up for success, I can help. Contact me today at [email protected] or visit my website at https://www.crimsonhound.com .
