Lapis Lazuli

In Mesopotamia, Lapis Lazuli was prized above almost all other materials, associated with royalty, divine status, and the heavens.

Famous artifacts like the Standard of Ur (c. 2500 BCE) feature elaborate lapis mosaics depicting royal life and warfare.

In the Greco-Roman world, Lapis was known as sapphirus (the term "sapphire" was only applied to blue corundum much later). Romans believed lapis was a powerful aphrodisiac and symbolic of elite and high birth.

The Story Behind Ocean Jasper:

A brief mention of eye-patterned jasper from northwestern Madagascar appeared in geology books in the 1920s, but the exact location was forgotten for decades.

French prospector Paul Obeniche spent years searching for the lost deposit. In October 1999, his team spotted the vibrant, orb-patterned stone along the shores of Marovato—visible only at low tide!

Because the coastal deposit was so remote with no roads nearby, miners had to collect the raw stones during low tide and transport them out purely by boat.

Geologically an orbicular chalcedony, it’s famous for its colorful "orbs," bands, and crystal pockets (druzy). Because the original oceanfront veins were completely mined out by 2006, genuine Ocean Jasper remains a prized collector's treasure!
