Happy Birthday to my best friend and brother, Scott Westin. Love ya, brother

06/16/2019

I truly love something about my job every day, whether it be interacting with the doctors that I work with, the technicians, the clients, the pets or the case which I am taking care of......there is nothing better than delivering healthy babies via C-section...….to hear those babies crying is pure happiness. Thank you to my clients that entrust me with this, you make my day.

So, yesterday, I am seeing my last two appointments of the day. I go into the first room and strike up a conversation with the client and have a great time talking about her pet, a beautiful black German Shepherd. She needed vaccinations to she could board her dog while she visited her 97 year old mother. She mentions that her Mom is very spry and active and recently planted peonies. Well, growing up in South Dakota, I know they don't grow down here, so I said, " She must be up north." The client affirms this and says, "Yes, she is in South Dakota." Well, now it's on, afterall I know EVERYONE in South Dakota, so I asked where. She responded, down where Nebraska and Sioux City Iowa meet". I am dumbfounded and say, "that's where I grew up, in Elk Point, SD!".....she says, "SO DID, I"!!!! Turns out she was my sister's classmate and her youngest brother was mine....LOL. It's a small world Southeast Texas and I love being a part of this community. The second client I saw, before going home, was my very first client as a new veterinarian out of school.....what a great day it was.

Thank you Dr. Brady Hanson for giving me the opportunity to expand my veterinary medical knowledge and being a great mentor. Though I have some experience in orthopedics surgery, it has been 13+ years since I have pinned a leg or attempted to repair a cruciate ligament and I have never plated a fracture before. Dr. Brady made it easy for me, calm, clear and concise directions and had it done in nothing flat....well, an hour anyway. A tibial fracture that needed plating and had been treated by another veterinarian with a splint and when that didn't work, they were told that it couldn't be repaired by anybody in the Golden Triangle and had to be referred all the way to Lake Charles to be repaired. Got it done. This very special client had enough confidence in Dr. Hanson and myself to agreed to let me learn on their pet.

Met with Dr. Wehner and his wonderful staff this morning....Wow! Very impressed, life is good. Spent a few minutes having coffee with Dr. Wehner's posse and had a great time swapping stories with some of his best friends and they treated me as if I had always been there....that's class! Then Doc took me on a tour of the clinic and introduced me to the staff, it's a great crew and inspite the obvious trepidations that I am sure they felt at having a new doctor invade their territory, they were wonderful and kind. I very much look forward to working with them and Dr. Wehner. After spending a very short time with him, I feel that our medical "styles" will compliment each other very nicely and hope that he sticks around to continue practicing far into the future.

Very excited to finally be able to announce that Wilcox Veterinary Clinic has purchased Calder Animal Clinic at 7590 Calder Ave in Beaumont, TX and as of next week I will be seeing patients there along with long-time owner, Dr. Wehner. This is a great chance for me to reconnect with my longtime Beaumont area clients that may have found it difficult or impossible to travel to our Groves location for their pet care needs. We are all looking forward to welcoming the Calder Animal Hospital staff to our Family and I am looking forward to working side-by-side with Dr. Wehner and his very popular staff.

So, I have been doing a lot of thinking about the "second chance" that I have received that has led me to become part of the incredible team/family that is Wilcox Vet. This quiet inner dialogue (because an out loud dialogue would end me up in a straight jacket), has led me to thinking about another important "second" that I routinely talk to my clients about, that is "second opinions". I don't have much of an inflated ego, when it comes to veterinary medicine....I am very willing to admit that I don't know everything and in spite of my best efforts to diagnose each and every case with precision and in a timely manner, often times I seek my colleagues out to ask for their opinions on cases and often get eye opening information that makes me rethink and look at a case with new eyes. That's good! Getting tunnel vision and blundering forward with a dead set notion that "it's this and nothing else" can lead to problems for your patient, their "parents" and the doctor. All that said, don't be afraid to seek out a "second opinion" when you have concerns about your pet's health or you don't think your vet is addressing your concerns (you know your pet better than anyone). Second opinions can be done at your vet with another doctor within that practice or at an outside clinic with a doctor of your choosing or one recommended by your vet. Every case is different and some cases, spinal cord injuries for example, time is of the essence and the time for a second opinion may or may not be there. In short, DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK!

Tomorrow morning, I embark on a new life with Wilcox Veterinary Clinic in Groves, Texas. Though, I will miss many of my former colleagues (you can't help but think of them as family, after 10 years), I am excited to become part of a new family that will see me through until I am old and grey (older and greyer....lol). I look forward to serving many of my old friends and meeting new friends and providing their furry, feathered and scaled family members with the best in veterinary care. To my Sherwood Animal Clinic clients, that will not be visiting me in Groves, it has been my honor and a privilege to take care of your "children" over the last ten years and
"Thank you, and God Bless You" for putting that trust in me, I will miss you all very much.

03/13/2019

I've been waiting some time to announce that I will be leaving Sherwood Animal Clinic this coming Friday, March 15, 2019. After 10 years of faithful service, I will be joining Wilcox Veterinary Clinic in Groves, TX in a new adventure that will change the face of Veterinary Medicine in Southeast Texas in the years to come. I hope to see many of my old family members (clients) and continue the care that you have come to expect, for your kids and YOU, that I have provided over the last 17 years. I will be using this page to update pet owners on the standards of Veterinary care, new existing procedures and the newest in the research and upcoming Vet Care. It's going to be very exciting and I look forward to serving you for many years to come (or as long as I can hold out, Hell, I'm getting old....) I will be updating this page regularly, so please keep in touch. Doc.
