Kodiak Animal Shelter

Kodiak Animal Shelter The Humane Society of Kodiak has operated the only animal shelter for the entire Kodiak Archipelago since 1995.

The Humane Society of Kodiak has been contracted by the City of Kodiak to operate the Kodiak Animal Shelter since 1995, changing it to a “No Kill” shelter for friendly, adoptable animals in 1997 thanks to community support. It is solely through memberships, fundraising, and donations that we are able to spay/neuter and provide other veterinary care for the animals awaiting adoption. We are not me

mbers of, nor are we formally affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States or the American Humane Society. We have our own bylaws and mission statement and operate independently to service Kodiak Island in its entirety, including the city, Borough, Villages, and the Coast Guard Base. Our focus and the point to our fundraising is to prevent the cruelty of animals through education and by promoting responsible pet ownership, reducing the population of abandoned pets through spay/neuter programs and to promote the proper care of animals impounded at the shelter. If you have an after-hours emergency, please call the Kodiak Police Department (KPD) at (907) 486-8000. If you have a found or surrendered animal, you may leave it in the drop-off hut after hours, but please leave us with information on the form provided in the hut and please call KPD to notify them of the pet.

Pet of the week
Dustin: 9 yr old, DMH
Dustin is a cat with a big personality, playful streak, and just the right amount of sass. This handsome guy enjoys the quieter side of life and would thrive in a calm home where he can be the center of attention. While he has done well around other cats at times, he tends to feel most comfortable when he’s the only pet in the household. A peaceful environment helps him feel secure and keeps him at his very best.

Dustin is an independent companion who likes being near his people without constantly being in the spotlight. You’ll often find him snoozing at the foot of the bed, lounging beside you on the couch, or quietly keeping tabs on whatever you’re doing. Affection is very much on his terms, but when he decides it’s cuddle time, he is incredibly sweet and loving. Like many cats with strong opinions, he can get a little grumbly. (expect the occasional swat or “love bite” when he’s feeling overstimulated).

Playtime is one of Dustin’s favorite things! He loves noisy toys, feather wands, laser pointers, and especially catnip, eating it, rolling in it, and fully embracing the experience. He’ll also need plenty of scratching posts to help keep his claws busy and your furniture safe. Future adopters should know he’s a clever little food thief who may help himself to snacks left on counters and has been known to nibble on houseplants.

Because he can become stressed in busy environments, we recommend a quiet adult home or one with older, respectful children. If you’re looking for a cat with personality, charm, and a little bit of mischievous energy, Dustin may just be your perfect match.

Pet of the week:
I’m Buddy, and I’ve got a big personality to match my fluffy good looks. I’m playful, affectionate, and always ready to keep life interesting. Catnip is one of my favorite things in the world, and I love chasing strings, batting around toys, and showing off my energetic side with feather wands and playtime adventures. I also adore being brushed — nothing beats a good grooming session and some extra attention.

I’m definitely the kind of cat who likes to stay involved in your daily routine… even at 3–4 AM. Don’t be surprised if I stop by to check on you or yowl from another room when I’ve decided it’s time for attention. I like being part of the action and making sure you know I’m around.

When it comes to other animals, I much prefer feline friends over dogs. I can get a little overstimulated with too much petting and may give a gentle nibble to let you know I need a break, so I’d do best with someone who understands cat body language and appreciates a spirited companion. If you’re looking for a fun, talkative, loving cat with plenty of charm and character, I just might be your guy.

Ashoka: 20 mth old, English Bulldog
Very smart and eager to learn. Knows basic commands. Food motivated. Is good on a leash, loves belly rubs, snuggling, and chewy toys. Great with older children (teens) and seems to do well with cats. Although she has lived with other dogs, she needs to be the only dog in the household.
Please contact the animal shelter at 486-8077 if you are interested in opening your home and heart to Ashoka.
