🌧️🐾 During the Great Monsoon of 2026, I have officially:
• Bathed the same Golden Retriever twice
• Taken in a foster with a white coat
• Considered building an ark to get to the fenced yard
• Had my own dogs yell at me because we can’t play ball

At this point I’m pretty sure my driveway is one heavy rain away from becoming waterfront property. 😅

If we’ve already talked and set dates and you’re just waiting on paperwork, you are LOCKED IN and your spot is safe! Between the nonstop rain chaos, the holiday boarding and switching all of Clever Canine over to new business software, transferring everything from one system to another has been a much bigger process than I expected. Just know I’m working through it all as fast as possible and your paperwork is coming.

Also, June & July are almost completely booked up already 👀 If you’ve been thinking about boarding, don’t wait too long to reach out because dates are disappearing fast.

When I was 20, I got my first Doberman. Eight months later, I got my second, Rogue. As the years passed, my little crew grew to four. Dobermans became my heart breed, but Rogue… she was my soul dog.

Rogue and her brother Harpo were everything to me. I lost Harpo to DCM just shy of his 8th birthday, and after that Rogue became my rock. She was my first sport dog, my first true working dog, and she tested every part of me as both a person and a trainer. But the loyalty, love, and absolute goofiness that dog gave me every single day is something I’ll never fully be able to explain.

As time went on, I heartbreakingly lost my Dobermans one after another until only Rue was left. I knew I wanted her to help raise a puppy because she was incredible at it, but I also knew my heart needed a little break from Dobermans.

That’s where Balti came in, my first Malinois, and the dog many of my clients now know and love. He became the other half of my soul. In so many ways, I see pieces of Rogue in him.

You’ll hear plenty of Balti stories from me. Like how he casually clears 6 foot fences, loves swimming while being hilariously bad at it, insists on riding in the front seat because apparently personal space is offensive, fears trash bags with his whole chest, yet would confidently challenge a leaf blower to mortal combat.

That dog has tested every inch of my sanity while also making me a stronger trainer. But the way he loves me is something special. Balti truly acts like I hung the moon, and honestly, I feel the same about him.

Now our crew has grown into three amazing Malinois: Balti, Cyrus, and Tess. Each one has brought something different into my life and taught me something new along the way. And I know one day, when the time is right, another Doberman will find their way back into our family too.

We lost Rogue almost three years ago, just shy of her 11th birthday, and not a single day goes by that she isn’t missed.

So that’s why a Doberman and a Malinois became the face of Clever Canine. They’re more than just breeds to me. They represent loyalty, resilience, growth, heartbreak, and the dogs that shaped who I am today 🖤

This sweet male dog was found near Gibbs Groom Shop on Tazewell Pike. He is currently safe with one of my clients while we try to get him back home to his family 🐾

Edit: this boy will be coming home with me in the morning. We are going to check again for a micro chip and give it 2 weeks. If he is not claimed I will be vetting people for adoption but I really hope to find his people.

I don’t remember a time when animals weren’t around me. They’ve just always shown up and stayed. Strays, fosters, the neighbor’s dog that decided I was its person. I’m basically Snow White but make it muddy boots and a fenced yard.

Fourteen years ago I started turning that into something. Training dogs, learning them, figuring out what makes each one tick. I’ve competed in dog sports, trained service dogs, rehabilitated dogs with aggression, and helped the anxious ones find their confidence. I’ve lived with Belgian Malinois and Dobermans so my tolerance for chaos is genuinely impressive. I’ve also tried to walk away from this more than once. Tried to be someone who clocks out and doesn’t think about dogs on her days off. It never worked. This world always pulled me back and honestly I stopped being mad about it.

Clever Canine is what happens when you finally stop running from the thing you love. I opened it three years ago because I wanted to do this right. Small, intentional, personal. Your dog comes into my home and becomes part of it. Not a kennel number. Not a drop off. Just a dog who belongs here for a little while.

I do boarding and I do training. Private lessons, training folded into a boarding stay, or both. If your dog needs work we can work. If they just need somewhere safe and loved while you’re gone, I’ve got that too. And if they’re a lot, I’ve been waiting for them.

When I’m not covered in fur and training leads, I’m out exploring with my husband Chris. We love to travel and we’re on a mission to hike every national park, which feels ambitious until you remember I willingly own Malinois. I also have three beautiful kids and a hoard of cats who, if we’re being honest, actually run this place. The dogs just think they do.

I’ve tried other things. I always come back. So this time I’m not leaving. Clever Canine is it for me. The thing I’m building to last, the one that goes on for as long as dogs keep finding me.

Which, if history says anything, will be forever. 🐾

The amount of support, encouragement, shares, messages, and interest in Clever Canine has honestly overwhelmed us in the best possible way. We are so grateful and excited for this journey.

We’ve had a lot of people ask to come tour our setup, and we completely understand wanting to see where your dogs will be staying and spending their time. While we would truly love to have every single one of you come see our setup, Clever Canine is also still our personal home where we live with our family and our own dogs.

After talking it over with my husband, we feel the best option for everyone, including our boarding dogs, will be to create a detailed video walkthrough of our setup and space that we can send out by request. This allows everyone to see the environment, setup, and care your pups will receive while also helping us maintain a calm, comfortable, and safe home environment. 🐶❤️

We appreciate the understanding more than you know, and we cannot wait to work with all of your amazing dogs.
