🐾 Training Tip Tuesday: Respecting the Bowl – Food Manners 101 🐾

Does your pup dive for dropped snacks or hover a little too closely during dinner? It’s time for a crash course in food manners!

Here’s how to teach “leave it” the right way:
1️⃣ Start Small – Begin with low-value items like kibble. Place it on the ground, cover it with your hand, and say “leave it.” When your dog backs off, reward them with a better treat from your other hand.
2️⃣ Make It Worth It – The reward should be more exciting than the original item. Left a cracker? Get a piece of chicken!
3️⃣ Leash Up for Success – Use a short leash to keep control during practice around the house or on walks — especially helpful when food’s on the ground.
4️⃣ Build Up Slowly – Start with short “leave it” durations and close distances. Gradually increase both to help your dog generalize the cue in real-world situations.
5️⃣ Practice with Real Distractions – Try it near your dinner table, while prepping food, or outside during a picnic. Keep it short and sweet — and always set your pup up for success!

🦴 Bonus Tip: Never let them snag the food after you’ve said “leave it.” That teaches persistence instead of patience!

Consistency is key. Keep it fun, rewarding, and positive — your dog will be a polite eater in no time!

🐶🎓 Training Tip Tuesday: Teach Your Dog “Place” & “Stay”! 🎓🐶
Does your pup get a little too excited when guests arrive? This week’s tip is all about teaching calm, controlled behavior with two simple commands: “Place” and “Stay.”
✨ Step 1: Teach “Place”
Pick a mat, bed, or a specific spot.
Say “Place” and guide your dog using a treat or leash.
When they reach the spot, say “Yes!” or click, then reward with a treat.
Repeat until they go to the spot on command.
✨ Step 2: Add “Stay”
Once they’re on their spot, say “Stay.”
Start with short durations and reward while they remain in place.
Gradually increase the time and introduce distractions like door knocks or the doorbell.
✨ Practice for Real-Life Guests
Simulate visits by having someone knock or ring the bell.
Give your dog the “Place” and “Stay” commands.
Reward calm behavior—and reset if they break the stay.
Practice consistently so your dog’s ready when real guests show up!
