Glinda clearly thinks she is too pretty to be wearing a surgical suit 🙅🏻‍♀️
Glinda is too small for said suit, so she indeed is not wearing it. Kittens who are only 2.5 lbs are really too small for any surgical suit on the market and, honestly, they almost never need them. Very few kittens this little have surgical site complications due to the incision size (tiny) and their advanced healing factor. They bounce back so fast they honestly don’t miss a beat. I still am restricting their activity but that’s more of a peace of mind thing for me than a true necessity for 98% of kittens postop.
Today, Glinda goes to my primary vet to be assessed by Dr. Hicks and make plans for what to do about her needing her deciduous canines removed because of her overbite. Her mandibular (lower) canines are already interfering with her palate so they need to come out ASAP. Her adult ones likely will too when the time comes for that. I’ll update about that later; for now, we would deeply appreciate any and all support. Sharing, donating, and even just word of mouth would be a HUGE help.

Pretty girl Princess Tiana showing off her looks— especially her beautiful green eyes and heart shaped nose 💚🐈‍⬛🪷🩷
Tiana is a sweet, chatty girl who has been waiting for her forever home for the better part of 2.5 years. She’s friendly but not in-your-face with strangers. She loves attention, other cats of all ages, and is tolerant enough that I think she would do well with cat-conscious children.

Beluga takes being named after the canary of the sea very seriously and NEVER stops chattering and chirping. There is never a time this little guy isn’t chirping, purring, trilling, or meowing. He wants to be in your space 24/7 getting snuggles, pets, playing, or even just observing. He just loves being nearby.
Beluga is everything you could ever want in an adoptable kitten and more. He is outgoing, energetic, loving, snuggly, and talkative— what more could you possibly want?

“Why is your adoption fee $100 when shelters only charge $__?”
There are many answers to this question. First and foremost, I am a pricate rescue with no government funding whatsoever. Second, if I gave cats away for free or for $25, I’d be doing nothing to w**d out the people who are unserious about adopting or those who have poor intentions. Third, I am sending all cats home with at least $75 worth of product and more medical records, information, and resources than almost any other rescue you can find. I’ve had adopters from a very popular rescue in my area approach me in my local PetSmart and ask me what food would be best for their cat because the rescue didn’t tell them what they’d been eating and just gave them a ziploc bag of a day or two’s worth of unlabeled dry food. You will never have that concern when you adopt from me because I spell out every detail of their care and history for you. And I am also available 24/7 to answer texts, calls, and emails. I’ve had adopters call me at 4 am before asking for advice and am happy to have it happen because it proves they trust me and deeply care for their cat(s).
So, yes, my adoption fee might be higher than the county’s. But you’re getting resources from me that tje county will not give. And you are also funding my ability to take the cats the county would euthanize if they took them in.

Glinda, Grimmerie, Tin Man, & Scarecrow are spayed and neutered as of yesterday afternoon! They're also 2/3 vaccinated, microchipped, and negative for FIV/ FeLV/HW!!
Today was a long and semi-frustrating one due to me having to work my other job while this was going on. Lucky for me, my #1 volunteer, my incredible dad, did the kitten chauffeuring so l could keep my shift and make some extra $$.
Which is definitely needed because today's total was just short of $500, plus the $200 l'd already spent in deposits for them all. And we have 5 more to go! Plus, Glinda goes to my primary vet next Tuesday 12/9 for another look at her teeth. The surgeon today said she thinks she’ll need her mandibular (lower) canines extracted, so we’re gonna confirm that and probably get a surgery estimate at the same time.

I saw a post from another rescue the other day about one of their long-term residents being passed over because they start out timid. It included the caption “being scared is not a crime”. While I could not agree more, I also recognize that many potential adopters see any amount of fear, well-founded or not, as a reason not to adopt that cat.
Bast has been posted for adoption for over 2 years. I’ve had her for 3 years. She starts out a little timid but, honestly, she’s far from the most timid cat at my rescue. She leans into pets and ear rubs after sniffing your hand and getting a treat to show your good intentions; she’s just not going to crawl in your lap on day 1. And, really, most cats aren’t going to do that on day 1 either.
Bast and her 2 brothers came to me as 6-week-old kittens. They’d had time to develop fear of the humans who yelled at them, dogs that barked, and loud noises like cars and fireworks and blaring music. Bast has always been an incredibly well-behaved cat who is an angel for everything from vet visits to getting medicated and nail trims, but the longer she stays with me in foster, the longer her world stays as small as me and the potential adopters who visit. So she, like almost any other long-term foster or shelter resident, is going to be a little reserved at first. But that has not stopped her from getting attention from almost every adopter who steps through my door. They just always choose someone else over her.
Want to be the first adopter to choose Bast over anyone else? Message me to inquire or fill out an application at tinyurl.com/bbbyadoptionapplication

“Who runs BB’s Backyard?”
Me! Elizabeth Crass. I am a 25-year-old cat lifelong lover who has been rescuing cats since I was only 16 but started the rescue when I was 21. Since then, I’ve taken in over 60 cats to be vetted and adopted out to their forever homes. I’ve also helped with vettin, advisement, and financial support/caretaking for 20+ more cats in addition to that number. I have tech experience in both large and small animal and have done a lot of continued education through my own research, consults with vets, kitten care seminars, and through having had a lot of high-needs special needs cats in my rescue with issues ranging from IBD & GI lymphoma to FLUTD and juvenile kidney dysplasia. I’ve had cats with seizures, cats with heart conditions like HCM and defective valves, cats with asthma, cats with neuro disorders… you name it, I’ve probably come across it in some form or fashion.
I would tell you about my life outside of rescuing cats but, honestly, there’s not much to me. I have 9 cats of my own; the one pictured here is Jinx, whom I’m convinced is a part of my soul “personified” in cat form. I love wildlife so I go birding and hiking as much as I can and I love to read (specifically nonfiction). I was a cultural anthropology major with plans of pivoting to both cultural and forensic anthropology but that was put on hold for, would you guess, the cat rescue. I also love tattoos— I have 11– and have been working on a memorial sleeve to honor some of the cats I’ve loved and lost during my time rescuing these beautiful little souls.

Buffalo: hello? Hellloooo? Anyone home? I’m looking for MY forever home!!
Buffalo is a sweet, outgoing, playful little guy with so much love to give. He has been raised by me since he was just 2 weeks old and therefore knows the love of a snuggly cat parent like myself and yearns for love from people nearly every waking moment of his day. Essentially, I created a velcro cat.
Buffalo chirps and trills and loves to play and snuggle. He would be a great addition to any home alongside another cat from my rescue or in a home with a preexisting cat. Want to learn more? Shoot us a message!

At a shelter, Elphaba— FKA Piggy— would not have made it.
At 4 weeks she contracted feline herpes and her right eye swelled shut. Her conjunctival tissue was so red and inflamed you could barely visualize her eye, and she became congested in her sinuses and was sniffly and sneezing. Her belly was so swollen from GI upset from food changes and a very, very high coccidia load that it looked like she’d swallowed an orange. She was so thin you could feel every vertebrae along with her pelvis directly under her fur.
Her finder asked the county shelter to evaluate her and they told her she’d have to be surrendered for that to be possible, and surrendering her also meant letting the county decide (based off resources) if she would live to see the next the day. She also could not be enrolled in their “Wait Till 8” program due to not being healthy.
Everyone has limited resources. Even the county. The difference is that, while the county often has to put down cats with high needs due to not having enough resources to care for them AND the healthy cats surrendered to them en masse, I as a private rescue am able to choose the cats I do and don’t take in. This means every cat under my care is safe and will get every bit of care they need no matter the cost. Because I’m caring for 20 cats, not 200. So I can budged and fundraise for Elphaba’s bills and the bills of other kittens like her. I can also manage the specialized care and monitoring which shelters cannot since they are not staffed 24/7.
Supporting county rescues is very important because they typically can’t turn down any cat. Adopting from them means saving a life. But, on the flip side, adopting from me or another private shelter is also saving a life. It’s also opening a space for me to take in another cat the county can’t/won’t want to manage so I can give them a second chance. The special needs cats, the feral adults, the older feral kittens… the ones left behind. Those are the cats I strive to help, and adopting from me lets me keep doing exactly that.
And that dedication is why Elphaba is still here today.

Happy Giving Tuesday!
This Giving Tuesday we would love any and all support for our 9 Wicked Kittens. 4 will be vetted on this Friday 12/5 and the other 5 will be vetted on 12/11. Glinda has an overbite that will be addressed and Brr and Elphaba have cost well over $500 just between the 2 of them with their herpes and bordetella issues + coccidia. Spaying and neutering them alone will cost about $1000 for all 9 + booster vaccines after, so any and all help would be greatly appreciated!
