Racehorse trainers include swimming in their training regimes for a variety of reasons. Swimming helps in developing and conditioning muscles, particularly those in the back, shoulders, and hindquarters, without the stress on joints and tendons that running might cause. This leads to improved muscle tone and endurance.

Another key benefit is injury prevention and rehabilitation. Swimming is low impact, making it ideal for horses recovering from injuries, especially leg injuries, allowing them to regain fitness safely. It's also used preventatively to minimize injury risk during intense training.

Swimming also enhances cardiovascular fitness, improving heart and lung capacity, which is essential for racehorses needing to perform at high levels over short, intense distances or longer races.

Mentally, swimming can be refreshing for horses. The change from the usual training routines on the track can keep horses mentally stimulated, potentially reducing boredom or behavioral issues.

After a hard workout or race, swimming serves as an effective way to cool down, managing post-exercise heat stress. For horses needing to manage their weight, swimming provides a calorie-burning exercise that's safer than overworking on land.

Swimming can also build confidence in horses. The calming nature of water can help nervous horses, possibly leading to better behavior and performance on the track.

Lastly, the resistance of water aids in improving flexibility and range of motion, crucial for the agility required in racing. Trainers use specialized facilities like equine hydrotherapy pools or treadmills where they can control water levels and speed to customize workouts to suit each horse's specific training, recovery, or conditioning needs.

Our Buddy Shiner is shining once again!! He spent a few days with us before heading to the Patriot!

Tilden Shofner and Shiners Smart Okie, “Shiner,” went 20.525 seconds and earned $1,680 in the Hooey Jr. Patriot 15 U Under pole bending at their first appearance at the Patriot Fort Worth.

The Pleasanton, Texas, cowgirl is competing in both the barrel racing and pole bending throughout her time in Fort Worth.

“I’ve been wanting to come to The Patriot for a few years now,” Shofner said. “It’s a big goal of mine. All my friends have talked about how cool it is and I was really excited to come.”
