Today's Caturday has been brought to you by calico cats.

With their unmistakable patches of orange, black, and white, calicos look like someone couldn't choose just one color and decided to use the whole palette.

A few fun facts:

🐾 Nearly all calico cats are female. Their coloring is linked to the X chromosome, making male calicos extremely rare.

🐾 Male calicos are estimated to occur in only about 1 in every 3,000 calico cats.

🐾 No two calicos have exactly the same markings. Every patchwork coat is essentially one of a kind.

🐾 Calicos can also come in a softer version called “dilute calico,” with patches of gray, cream, and white instead of black, orange, and white.

🐾 Calicos have been considered symbols of good luck in several cultures.

🐾 Maryland even named the calico its official state cat because its colors resemble those of the Baltimore oriole and Baltimore checkerspot butterfly.

Whether they're lucky, lovely, or simply convinced the entire house belongs to them, every calico is truly one of a kind.
