Not every lump or bump on your dog’s skin is cancer but every new growth or changing growth deserves attention.

As our canine and feline companions age, it’s very common for them to develop skin masses. Some are completely benign (non-cancerous), while others can be malignant (cancerous) or become problematic simply because of their size or location. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to know exactly what a mass is just by looking at it.

Some of the more common tumors and growths we see include:
🐾 Lipomas (fatty tumors) – Usually soft, slow-growing, and benign.
🐾 Sebaceous adenomas – Common “wart-like” growths, especially in senior dogs.
🐾 Histiocytomas – Benign tumors often seen in younger dogs that may disappear on their own.
🐾 Mast cell tumors – One of the most common malignant skin tumors in dogs. They can look like almost anything, making early evaluation especially important.
🐾 Soft tissue sarcomas – Tumors that often require surgical removal with careful margins.
🐾 Melanomas – Can occur on the skin, toes, or in the mouth and may be aggressive depending on the type.
🐾 Squamous cell carcinomas – A type of skin cancer that can develop on the skin, nail beds, or in the mouth.

If your pet has a new lump, one that’s growing, changing, bleeding, or bothering them, don’t wait to have it checked. Your veterinarian may recommend a fine needle aspirate (FNA) to collect cells for evaluation, and / or surgical removal if the mass is concerning or causing discomfort.

At Brookside Veterinary Hospital, our doctors can surgically remove many skin masses using advanced technology, including our surgical laser and electrosurgical cautery pens. These tools help provide excellent precision, reduce bleeding, minimize tissue trauma, and may improve comfort during recovery.

After removal, we may strongly recommend submitting the tissue to a veterinary pathologist for a biopsy. A biopsy tells us exactly what the mass is, whether it was completely removed, and if any additional treatment or monitoring is needed. This information is SO educational in helping your pet receive the best possible care.

Leptospirosis: A Serious Disease That’s Preventable

Did you know that leptospirosis (lepto) is a potentially life-threatening bacterial disease that can affect both dogs and people?

Dogs become infected by coming into contact with contaminated water, soil, mud, or the urine of infected wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, opossums, deer, rodents, and other mammals. Even something as simple as drinking from a puddle, walking through wet grass, or exploring the backyard can put your dog at risk.

⚠️ Signs of leptospirosis may include:
• Fever
• Lethargy or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea
• Increased thirst and urination
• Muscle tenderness or reluctance to move
• Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or gums)
• Kidney or liver failure in severe cases

Some dogs may show only mild signs, while others can become critically ill very quickly.

💉 The good news? Leptospirosis is preventable!!!

A simple annual Leptospirosis vaccine provides excellent protection against the most common strains of the disease. Vaccination is recommended for ALL dogs, especially those who:
🐕 Spend time outdoors & go potty outdoors
🌲 Hike, camp, or visit the woods
💧 Swim or play in ponds, lakes, creeks, rivers, or puddles
🐿️ Live in areas where wildlife is common

Protecting your dog also helps reduce the risk of this disease spreading to your human family, as leptospirosis is considered a zoonotic disease (it can be transmitted from animals to PEOPLE).

We love some squeaky clean teeth!! This sweet baby suffers from periodontal disease which causes gingivitis and gingival recession. It is a progressive disease but can be slowed down with routine dental cleanings. Unfortunately, this pup had a couple of loose teeth removed but will be feeling much better soon!

🐾 Courtesy Post for Our Friends at Grand Traverse Animal Control 🐾

These two beautiful female Scottish Fold cats are searching for a loving forever home! They are 3 and 6 years old, and while they can be a little shy at first, they absolutely adore gentle pets and tasty treats. ❤️

They are currently staying with us at Brookside Veterinary Hospital, but the busy, fast-paced environment is stressful for them. We would love to see them settled into a quiet home where they can finally relax and enjoy the love they deserve.

💕 Our biggest wish is that they can be adopted together

Before inquiring, please take some time to research the Scottish Fold breed so you understand their unique needs and potential health considerations.

These sweet girls have already had their veterinary care started:

They are accustomed to living with dogs, but are not used to busy small children. They are also strictly indoor-only cats.
