Please share, a rabies positive bat was confirmed in Grand Traverse County. Rabies is almost always fatal if acquired. Dogs and cats can be direct transmissions to you. Please vaccinate your dogs and cats (indoor too).

Rabies-Positive Bat confirmed in Grand Traverse County. šŸ¦‡

The Grand Traverse County Health Department (GTCHD) has confirmed that a bat found inside a local residence tested positive for rabies. The bat was tested by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) after possible human exposure. All individuals identified as exposed are receiving the necessary post-exposure medical care.

Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, typically through a bite or scratch. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal—but it is preventable with prompt medical care and vaccination after exposure.

GTCHD strongly encourages the community to be vigilant and take precautions to prevent potential rabies exposure.

We lost one of our beloved hospital cats yesterday 9-19-25. Rico Suave was most commonly known as the cupboard or cabinet cat. He lived the majority of his 14 years in the cabinet under the computer in room 2 (our cat/small dog room). He loved to sleep in the cabinet all day and he would come out in the evenings to eat and use the litter pan. He never found a ā€œnormal homeā€ in a house but he did indeed call Brookside Veterinary Hospital home the last 14 years, and every staff member loved him dearly. His sister and littermate Charlotte Louise is still with us but is declining in health as well. She remains in good spirits and no longer has to worry about her brother, Rico. Rico had a heart condition that we managed with medication the last 6 or so years, but finally cancer is what took him over šŸ’” Fly high sweet Rico Suave, we will see you over the Rainbow Bridge one day, no more suffering and pain anymore.

Did you know that a microchip is good for life? A tiny, rice-sized device that doesn’t hurt your pet at all can provide permanent identification in the event of being lost or for travel, and even in case of theft! Collars and tags can wear down or fall off. Having your pet microchipped is now a requirement to travel into Canada! Are you interested in getting a microchip for your cat or dog?
