We are closed tomorrow Friday, December 23rd and will remain closed until Tuesday, December 27th. Be safe this weekend, keep pets inside and livestock in dry areas as best as you can.

Our crews are ready to work through the holiday weekend and are prepared to run 24 hours until the storm passes. We are fully staffed on all shifts with our trucks ready to go, including spares. With the predicted high winds and heavy snow, we may have severe drifting that would require additional equipment to keep more remote roads open.

Our priorities will be state highways, primary roads, local roads, subdivisions, and gravel roads, in that order.

During heavy snow fall, material may not be put down, as the material would be scraped off before it has the chance to work.

During snow removal operations, our trucks are wider than just the dump box. Remember - plow trucks back up at intersections, take wider turns, and in general take up a lot more room. Don’t crowd the plow!

Please limit travel if you can. Follow our Winter Maintenance Ordinance – NO PARKING ON THE SIDES OF THE ROADS DURING SNOW EVENTS.
Be safe and enjoy!

Please do not stop your Heartgard Plus through the winter months. A warmer fall or winter day will awaken the mosquitos that carry deadly Heartworms. Unfortunately, we just diagnosed a dog with heartworm last week. It is in our area. It is cheaper to keep your dog on Heartgard Plus monthly than it is to go through treatment 🤑 Not to mention, the treatment is not only expensive but can be quite painful for your dog 😢 For the sake of your dog and your pocket book keep your pup on their Heartgard Plus each month all 12 months of the year 🗓✅

Where are the heartworms? Here's what the latest American Heartworm Society incidence survey reveals. https://bit.ly/3N1SZeN

08/24/2022

We have heard the news about a parvo like sickness that is affecting dogs that are typically under the age of 2 years old and some are vaccinated & some are not.

Per Michigan State University there seems to be a correlation with these sicknesses & parvovirus as some of the samples are testing positive for parvovirus at their lab. However they are still investigating.

We have been seeing many GI cases in the last month, and only 1 positive parvovirus case here at Brookside Veterinary Hospital. This is not abnormal for us as we see many GI cases throughout the year. The one positive parvovirus patient was not in our building & was referred to 24 hour critical care but did not make it.

We want to put some advice out for our clients & their pets. Ensure your pet is fully vaccinated with a DAPP veterinary given vaccine. Unsure of your pet’s vaccination status? Send us an email at [email protected] ! The safest thing you can do right now is to keep your dogs at home, especially those that are under the age of 2 years old and those that may not be fully vaccinated (fully vaccinated means 2-4 DAPP vaccines as a puppy then once a year thereafter-this is OUR protocol). If YOU HAVE BREEDING DOGS, the females should also be updated on their veterinary given DAPP to ensure the puppies have some sort of antibody immunity to parvovirus. Stools should be picked up immediately outside.

Please give us a call at 231-263-7387 if you are a current client & your pet is experiencing any diarrhea or vomiting that is lasting more than 24 hours to determine what needs to be done.

Want to know how to contact the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development? On this page you will find phone numbers, email addresses, snail mail addresses, and online contact forms for everything we do here at MDARD. We even have a complaint form for those of you with complaints.

Eagle exams at Brookside Veterinary Hospital are a routine event for us, but hazmat suits are not.

You might’ve heard the news last week that the DNR confirmed multiple cases of avian flu in wild birds. All of the cases (Six Canadian geese, two tundra swans, and a pair of snowy owls) were located downstate from us, but that’s part of the problem: many of these birds are migrating north, towards us.

NPR reported yesterday that over 5 million chickens have already been killed within the past two weeks to curb the spread of the disease within poultry farms across the nation. The disease is spread typically through physical contact with a sick bird, but proximity also plays a role. While most birds do not show symptoms if they are infected with it, the disease has a high mortality rate among raptors. Because of this, a few of the wildlife rehabilitation centers around the state have already announced that they will not be accepting bird patients for the remainder of the season because of the risk.

Despite the risk, SRC plans on accepting patients for as long as possible. Our executive board has been following the situation closely for several weeks now, and even though this is the worst outbreak since 2015 when it left 50 million birds dead, we’ve laid the foundation for a strong biohazard security program.

This is where we need your help: we’ve divided up our new patients into different quarantine zones to reduce the chances of transmission between the birds. This means a lot of driving. And washing. And sanitizing. We’re taking this seriously because while there is very little chance of us humans catching the disease, our other feathered friends will be at risk; namely our two education ambassadors, Pearl and Esther. We are passionate about rehabilitation and want to make sure that we’re taking care of the birds (plus ourselves and our other animals) to the best of our abilities.

If you’d like to help, this is our Amazon Wishlist:

As always, thank you so much for your continued support. We’re just trying to do what’s best for the birds — even if that means extra cleaning and more late nights on our part.

UPDATE: Thank you so much for the outpouring of support. Words cannot express how deeply we were touched to see how much you all care about our mission. Within the past 12 hours, we received enough supplies to last us for 3+ months. Thank you again from all of us here at SRC. This really means the world to us.

The key to providing compassionate, quality care for our patients are the partners who share our passion. Yesterday, the staff at Brookside Veterinary Hospital once again squeezed us in at a moment’s notice and stayed late to see two of our current patients.
Dr. Chris Bruning generously matched $500 in donations this past month. We are extremely grateful for her generous support. Please help us say thank you to Dr. Bruning in the comment section below!

Our Gunshot victim made an afterhours visit to Brookside Veterinary Hospital, where vet tech Tanya Mouthaan administered anesthesia. This allowed us to perform an exam, take x-rays, clean the wounds, and bandage the wing.
Dr. Chris Bruning and the staff at Brookside have been a wonderful partner in providing quality medical care to the raptors. You can help too! When you share our posts, it helps spread the word about the work we do. Your generous support gives these birds a second chance! Will you consider including SRC in your year-end giving? Use the shop button on our FB page or visit SkegemogRaptorCenter.org to make a donation by credit card.
Research technician Kevin Haynes with the LTBB Odawa Natural Resources Department rescued this young Bald Eagle found alongside the road in the Harbor Springs area. We think this female was involved in a vehicle collision. Upon arrival we checked for injuries. We could not palpate any fractures but her right shoulder was quite tender. X-rays confirm no fractures or dislocations. She was given her fluids and started on pain medication. She has been recovering nicely and eating us out of house and home. On October 14, she began her flight conditioning portion of rehabilitation.

We need your help caring for this Eagle. Your donations pay for the food and medications needed to get this beautiful youngster back to the wild.

A huge thank you to LTBB Odawa Natural Resources Department, Wings of Wonder, and Brookside Veterinary Hospital for their shared passion in helping the raptors!
You know why I can relate to this. Must have been Feona's mentor.

This male American Kestrel was admitted on July 11 with two injured toes, The middle toe on the right foot was fractured and the outside toe on the left foot was dislocated. We were unable to save the toe on the left foot and it had to be removed. Luckily the other healed properly.
After his injuries healed, we put him through rigorous flight conditioning and hunt training. Chris Johnson and I are very grateful to Tanya Mouthaan and Dr. Chris Bruning of Brookside Veterinary Hospital for their assistance with this young falcon. He was released back to the wild on Sept. 20.

The cost of rehabilitating this 1/4 lb falcon was over 200$. Can you help cover costs by donating to SRC?
