CANS FOR KITTIES - A CHALLENGE
Recently Llano Kitty Fixers began a program to collect aluminum cans as a fundraiser. While we began collecting from individuals as well as a couple of schools and churches, we recently expanded the program to include local bars and restaurants. Our first collection bin was placed at Joe's Bar in Llano. In the first week that bin collected 12 pounds (about 384 cans). Then Sundown took up the challenge and took the lead last week with 50 pounds (about 1,600 cans). Not to be outdone, Joe's Bar regained the lead with 192 pounds of cans so far this month (about 6,000 cans). That's a lot of aluminum cans that won't end up in a landfill or on the side of the road but instead will be recycled and will benefit the community cats of Llano County.
Very soon Cans for Kitties will be adding a bin at Lowe's Market in Llano where individuals can drop off empty aluminum cans when you go grocery shopping or you just want to recycle the empty aluminum cans you collected over days or weeks.
We are also negotiating for permission to place bins at other locations. Do you own, run, or work in a bar or tavern or restaurant where beer, soda, or other beverages are sold in aluminum cans for on-site consumption? If so you can contact Mark at 432-528-8454 for a Cans for Kitties bin. We take care of collecting the cans deposited in the bins. All of the proceeds from this program go to Llano Kitty Fixers, an all volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to trap/spay-neuter/return community and feral cats in Llano County.
So how do you, as an individual, participate? Well you just buy your beer, soda, or other beverage that comes in a can, drink it, then toss the empties in the nearest Cans for Kitties bin. If you are at a bar or restaurant just buy and drink the beverage and the server will toss the can in the bin for you. It is that simple.
As far as the businesses are concerned, how about a good old fashioned unofficial contest for bragging rights? Who can collect and donate the most cans each week or each month? A post on the progress of the program will be made on this page each week.
You have some other type of business or organization such as a gas station or a school? Call Mark to get set up with a Cans for Kitties bin.
