🙌💚Over the past couple of months, our great crested newt detection dogs have been working hard in support of Wessex Water’s capital projects. Their efforts have not only enhanced conservation outcomes but also delivered significant efficiency gains—saving a combined 12 months in project delays and over £15,000 in costs.

🕰️ By reducing the need for extended ecologist time on-site and replacing more time-intensive traditional methods, the dogs have played a key role in protecting great crested newts while streamlining our project timelines.

🐾With another busy couple of months ahead, we’re looking forward to continuing this service.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting a work experience student all the way from Cheshire. Charlotte, who’s currently studying Chemistry and Biology at sixth form, has a real passion for working with animals—and it definitely showed throughout her time with us.

During her placement, Charlotte got to see our great crested newt detection dogs in action, searching for this elusive species in both controlled and wild environments—with multiple finds! She also came to watch the contaminated surface water detection dogs at work during our training day with CAPE. All five dogs were absolutely brilliant, but Charlotte quickly found favourites in Obi and Bandit.

It was a joy having Charlotte with us—we wish her all the best in her future studies and career with animals!

🤟We’ve had a fantastic couple of days with Louise Wilson from Conservation K9 Consultancy, completing our annual assessments and continuing our CPD. For the past seven years, we’ve undertaken this process to ensure we consistently meet operational standards and deliver a high-quality service to Wessex Water.

🙌The dogs performed exceptionally well—Obi, in particular, has made remarkable progress over the past year, maintaining focus and carrying out detailed searches in highly distracting environments. Newky and Freya continued to impress with their usual reliability.

🤝Louise once again provided valuable feedback and guidance to help us continue refining our work and upholding the standards expected by Wessex Water. Big thank you as always for making time for us 🥰.

🦎Great crested newt detection work has been ramping up over the last few weeks, with many more projects lined up over the spring/summer months including precautionary checks and works under low impact clsss licences.

We are also preparing to commence temporary capture of great created newts for the final trials as part of my PhD research and Obi’s final assessment 😱.

🦎🐕🐾 The great crested newt detection dogs are starting to ramp up their workload over the next month as we start to move into the spring period. I am beyond excited and cannot wait to get going again after lots of training over the last couple of months. We had our first precautionary search last week and again this week. All dogs performed beautifully👌.

🥳we celebrated our 4 year gotcha day with rescue recruit Obi on the 3rd March. This boy is really coming into his own and has been showcasing his operational skills. I also submitted the last EVER research trial proposal the other day which will round off my PhD with Obis final trial 🥹 where have those 5 years gone!?

🤿 Freya had her first hydrotherapy session yesterday. Big thank you to for a wonderful session. Looking forward to the next one ☺️.

💧The contaminated surface water detection dogs, Bandit and Bluey, are doing exceptionally well on their training odour and will be imprinting in the next couple of weeks. Very exciting times ahead. I cannot wait to get going this year 😁.

💜 Eight years ago I met an incredible woman who changed the trajectory of my life, not just my career.

I had spoken to Louise Wilson, director of conservation k9 consultancy, over email for a few weeks to see if she could help train my 18 month old dog, Freya, to detect great crested newts. Louise politely answered my many questions surrounding accreditation and whether she could supply me with newts 🥴, suggesting I brought Freya along to a course she was holding in Cheshire. Little did louise know Freya had already proven herself to be the worlds first Morrisons own medium strength curry powder detection dog 😅😂.

Well I still remember the first day of the course (mainly being laughed at for my choice of training odour). Louise sparked a passion inside of me for conservation detection dog work and that passion has helped shape the last eight years of my life. I still remember coming home after the first day and knowing this was exactly what I was going to do alongside my formidable co-woofer Freya, and now 4 additional co-woofers (Newky, Obi, Bandit and Bluey).

Since 2017 I have continued to seek training, advice, mentorship and friendship from this incredible woman. Her passion for detection work is infectious and I still love stalking her all around the world and watching her work her magic with her dog centred approach to detection. Thank you louise from the bottom of my heart. You truly changed my life and I have you to thank for getting to where I am now 🥰.

Last week I had the honour of lecturing to final year students at the University of Salford. The lectures consisted of habitat surveys as well as the practical application of detection dogs. We ended the session with a demonstration of the great crested newt dogs performing searches on the university grounds. Outside of lecturing I was making use of lab time on an exciting chapter of my thesis. Excellent way to celebrate women in science day!

I also want to wish Newky a wonderful 8th birthday 🥳 we were busy demoing and travelling back on Friday to celebrate properly. He had his annual trip to the local pet store today to pick his favourite toy and treats 🥰. He chose a very manly butterfly 🦋😂
