๐ FIREWORKS + PETS = OUR BUSIEST TIME OF THE YEAR. ๐
The good news? A lot of those trips to the shelter are preventable.
Here's how you can help keep your pet safe this Fourth of July, and help us get them home quickly if they do end up with us.
๐พ Keep them inside. Even pets who have never run away can panic when fireworks start.
๐พ Make sure they're wearing a collar with an ID tag. A phone number on a tag is often the fastest ticket home.
๐พ Check that their microchip information is up to date. A microchip only works if the contact information is current!
๐พ Keep doors and gates secure. Remind guests to be extra careful coming and going.
๐พ Exercise them before the fireworks begin. A tired pet is often a calmer pet.
๐พ Give them a safe place to hide. Close the curtains, turn on the TV or some music, and let them ride out the noise somewhere they feel secure.
๐ If your pet goes missing:
โข Search your neighborhood immediately.
โข Keep an eye on our page! We post every found animal that comes into our care as quickly as we can, and many pets are reunited with their families because someone recognizes them in one of our posts.
โข Post clear photos in local lost-and-found pet groups.
โข File a lost pet report with us as soon as possible.
๐ If you find a lost pet:
โข Check for an ID tag and have them scanned for a microchip. Most veterinary clinics and shelters will scan for free.
โข Before bringing them to the shelter, file a Found Pet Report with us. If we already have a matching Lost Pet Report, we may be able to reunite the pet with their family immediately and keep them from ever needing to enter the shelter.
We want nothing more than to spend the weekend reuniting pets with their families instead of filling kennels.
A few minutes of preparation today could save you, and your pet, a whole lot of heartache tomorrow. Stay safe, everyone! โค๏ธ
