Welcome to June.🌿☀️ As the summer heat and rainy season set in, our livestock need a little extra TLC to thrive. Here are a few key things to focus on this month to keep your herd and flock happy and healthy:
💧 Beat the Heat: High humidity and scorching temperatures can lead to dangerous heat stress. Ensure all your animals have access to abundant, cool, and shaded water. Double-check that coops and run-in sheds have excellent ventilation and consider adding fans if necessary.
🦟 Pest & Parasite Control: Florida’s wet, warm weather is a breeding ground for flies, mosquitoes, and internal parasites. Stay on top of your deworming, keep manure management under control, and use fly traps or topical treatments to keep your animals comfortable.
🌱 Pasture & Forage Care: Rotate your grazing paddocks to prevent overgrazing and allow the grass time to recover. Keep an eye out for toxic weeds that may pop up after heavy rains. If you need help with soil sampling or forage management, reach out to your local UF/IFAS Extension Office!
🐾 Daily Wellness Checks: Make early morning herd checks a habit. Look for signs of heat exhaustion, check for foot rot in ruminants due to wet conditions, and ensure everyone is eating and drinking well.
