🐴 Equine Nutrition Tip of the Day 🐴

Did you know that not all horse feeds are created equal?

Many commercial grain-based feeds are high in starches and sugars, which can place unnecessary stress on a horse’s digestive system. Horses are designed to consume forage throughout the day, and large grain meals can sometimes contribute to digestive upset and metabolic challenges.

⚠️ Potential concerns with high-grain diets may include:
• Increased risk of digestive disturbances such as colic and hindgut imbalance
• Greater likelihood of gastric ulcer development
• Blood sugar and insulin fluctuations that can impact metabolic health
• Excess energy that may present as excitability or difficult behavior
• Reduced nutritional value due to heavy processing
• Added sugars and sweeteners that offer little nutritional benefit

🌾 A forage-first approach, combined with a balanced nutrition program tailored to your horse’s individual needs, is often the foundation of long-term health, performance, and digestive wellness.

Every horse is different, and nutrition should never be a one-size-fits-all approach. If you have questions about your horse’s diet, we’re here to help!

Note: Some horses, especially performance horses, growing horses, and those with increased caloric needs, may benefit from carefully selected concentrates. Nutrition plans should always be individualized for the horse’s age, workload, body condition, and health status.

To all of our current and future clients:

As fuel, travel, equipment, and operating costs continue to rise, it is no longer financially sustainable for us to travel to barns with only one or two horses at our current rates. In order to continue providing the level of service and care our clients expect, we will be implementing the following pricing structure effective July 1, 2026:

• New clients with 1-2 horses requiring farm calls: $250 per horse

• Groups of 3 or more horses: current group pricing of approximately $175 per horse remains available

• Horses hauled to our location: current pricing remains available (existing clients rates)

Current clients will keep their existing rates and are not affected by this change.

We are currently at capacity, and this adjustment allows us to continue serving our existing clients while still making room for new horses that need quality dental care.

There are many options available when it comes to equine dentistry, but proper dental work requires significant training, experience, equipment, and time. We remain committed to doing the job correctly and providing the best care possible for every horse we see.

Thank you for your understanding, support, and trust in our practice.

As always please continue to follow the Klepinger Equine page for updates and our website at www.equinedentist01.com

PSA: We want to take a moment to thank all of our amazing clients for keeping us so busy — we truly appreciate every one of you and your horses 🐴💙

Right now, our schedule is extremely full as we travel across multiple states, and we are doing our best to stay on time and accommodate everyone. Jeff is getting close to no longer accepting new clients as we are filling up with current clients for next year. With that said, we kindly ask for your patience and understanding when it comes to scheduling, timing, and any unexpected changes.

Working with horses means things don’t always go exactly as planned — cases can take longer than expected, emergencies can arise, and travel can be unpredictable. We promise we are always working as efficiently and safely as possible while still giving each horse the care they deserve.

If we need to adjust timing or reschedule, please know it is never taken lightly. We are committed to providing quality care, not rushed care.

Thank you for your continued support, flexibility, and understanding — it truly means the world to our business.

Equine Nutrition of the Day:

🐴 Why Alfalfa Cubes MUST Be Fed Soaked 🐴

Alfalfa cubes are a great source of fiber and nutrition—but feeding them dry can pose a serious risk to your horse.

👉 Here’s why soaking matters:

✔️ Prevents choke
Dry cubes can expand quickly once they hit moisture in the throat, increasing the risk of choke—especially in horses that eat fast, seniors, or those with dental issues.

✔️ Prevents impaction colic
When dry pellets are fed without soaking, they can absorb moisture in the digestive tract and expand. If a horse isn’t properly hydrated—or can’t chew well—this can lead to a blockage (impaction), most commonly in the colon.

✔️ Improves digestion
Soaked cubes are easier to break down, allowing better nutrient absorption and reducing stress on the digestive system.

✔️ Supports dental health
Horses with worn, missing, or uneven teeth (very common!) struggle to properly chew dry cubes. Soaking makes them safe and manageable.

✔️ Adds hydration
Soaked feed helps increase water intake—especially important during travel, winter months, or for horses prone to dehydration.

💧 Best practice:
Soak alfalfa cubes for 15–30 minutes (or until fully soft and broken apart) before feeding.

At Klepinger Equine, we always recommend feeding with both nutrition and dental health in mind—because one directly affects the other.
