Have you ever questioned what matting looks like? You brush your dog, take them to the groomer, and are informed that they will have to be shaved short. You're puzzled because you regularly brush your dog's coat. So, how can it be matted?
This example showcases a coat that doesn't appear matted at first glance. Nevertheless, it was discovered that only the top layer of the coat was being brushed at home, while the underlying coat was matted to the skin and came off in one piece. To prevent matting, it's recommended to use a slicker brush to brush to the skin and a comb to gently work out tangles. Detangler can also be beneficial. Doodles, poodles, cockapoos, teddy bears, any coated dog, require daily brushing and frequent grooming. A matted coat not only prevents you from being able to have a fluffy, longer haircut, it also poses health risks to your dogs skin. Circulation is reduced, skin can become irritated, existing wounds can be hidden, and debris can be caught in the coat.
Ask your groomer to demonstrate line brushing techniques for your dog's coat and provide guidance on maintaining their fluffy coat! Fluffy not for you? That’s okay! Ask your groomer to frequently take down your dogs coat so that it doesn’t get matted in the first place 😊
I hope this side by side helps to show what groomers mean by “matted”!
