Davina Update
I got home from work and did my normal check—everything was fine. When Davina came in for dinner, my mom immediately noticed her leg and called me over. The second I saw it, I knew it was bad.
We called the vet right away and brought her in. At that point she was still sound—you could tell it had just happened. Very fresh, very clean. We wrapped it to keep it protected until the vet arrived, and thankfully she stood like a rock for us.
By the time he got there, the skin had already started drying. Once he cleaned it out… you could clearly see the cannon bone. This is the worst injury I’ve personally dealt with on one of my own horses.
Davina is a sensitive horse, and even sedated she wasn’t going to tolerate stitches well standing, so we made the call to lay her down. Honestly, it was the best decision—for her and for the vet. Safer, less stressful, and more controlled.
Right now, there are a few possibilities. The bone may have taken too much trauma, and part of it could die off, which would mean another surgery to remove it. Her body could reject it naturally. Or—best case—everything heals well and we’re able to return to riding once she’s recovered.
We’re in for a long road. Stall rest, hand walking, grazing only, and wraps for a while. One day at a time. The minis are on rotating 24hr shifts as her stall rest companion and I’m looking things to add in her stall to keep her busy mind occupied.
With that said, Davina is my only riding horse. For the month of May and June, I’ll be taking in one horse for training.
I’m looking for something that needs miles, finishing, More desensitizing, obstacle work, fine tuning, experience on trails—something I can continue riding and potentially haul out on trails. I’m open to yearlings, but I’d strongly prefer something rideable.
I will not be taking in problem horses or starting colts. Due to a head injury I had last year, I have to be very careful about what I swing my leg over. It’s not something I like, but it’s something I have to respect.
If you think you have a horse that fits, please PM me and I can share more details.
Thank you to everyone who’s checked in—we appreciate it more than you know. ❤️
