Change the way you think!

A lot of the reactive dog owners I work with struggle with the way they view their dog’s reactivity. And I get it!

But when you stop seeing it as an embarrassment, an annoyance, or something that’s hopeless AND start just being neutral about it or treating it like it’s not that big of a deal, you’ll start to make more progress in your training.

Here’s why:

1. You won’t be in worried-panic mode any more; you’ll be able to think more clearly as you work your dog through the situation

2. You’ll be more confident & you’ll actually want to work around your dog’s triggers

3. Your dog will notice this change & trust you more as a leader

I know it’s easier said than done but try. Next time you encounter a trigger just focus on the training you know. If your dog reacts, say to yourself “oh well, here’s what I probably could have done differently”.

And remember, your dog reacting isn’t the end of the world!

It’s always good to assess your dog’s health as you begin training for behavioral issues & when you see changes in your dog’s behavior.

Sometimes it’s not training issues, it’s a health/wellness issue.

For example, if your dog is nipping when you go to touch an area of the body, your dog might be experiencing pain or discomfort in that area. Training won’t help to address that but determining if your dog has an injury and addressing that will help.

Or if your dog has diarrhea on and off + your dog seems anxious or has trouble settling, addressing the root cause of the GI upset may help with the behavioral symptoms you’re experiencing with your dog.

If training isn’t getting your dog anywhere with their behavioral issues, this might be your sign to examine your dog’s overall health and wellness including diet + exercise.

Are you focusing too much on obedience?

For pet dogs, obedience can be great. It can help give your dog direction or guidance at times and teaching obedience is a good way to give your dog mental stimulation.

BUT… it’s not the only thing you should be doing and definitely not where I’d be spending most of my energy/time training a pet dog.

What to focus on:
✅ proper exposure to new places, things, dogs, people
✅ desensitization to sounds, handling, grooming tools etc.
✅ connection with my dog in and outside my home
✅ structure & boundaries
✅ building confidence

Finally finished! I’m so excited to announce the updates to my training programs.

I’ve been working on these for months trying to craft programs that are what clients & dogs need, are what clients want, and programs that I can be proud of and want to do.

Over the years I’ve tested out lots of different packages & programs. Kept what worked, tossed what didn’t. One of the biggest changes is that all programs include more one-on-one lessons/coaching and support for owners. The owners that do more training with me see more success.

It was hard & scary 🫣 tossing programs that have been the most popular. But I felt I could make programs better.

I’m most excited for my new hybrid B&T/private training program. Dogs stay with me much less but there is a lot more mandatory private training before and after your dog is with me.

If you are currently signed up for an old program, don’t worry, nothing will change for you.

Reach out for more info on the new programs!

9 years ago today we impulsively picked Ranger right out of the shelter in Fresno, CA. Little did I know then that this opinionated, fierce cattle dog would change the course of my life.

Ranger has been and always will be a challenging dog but I can’t even imagine life without him ♥️

To many more adventures!

I get a lot of questions about the e-collar, the most frequent is “will my dog get aggressive” or “will my dog not like me anymore”.

If these things were true, why would thousands of trainers and thousands of dog owners be using them. Any tool or even training method can make matters worse if used incorrectly.

I’ve used ecollars for years on my dogs and not once did I feel it negatively impacted their behavior or made my relationship with them suffer.

If the ecollar doesn’t feel right to you, that’s okay. But if you’ve been wondering about an ecollar, ask a qualified trainer about them. Don’t listen to people who have NEVER used an ecollar or to someone who used one incorrectly without guidance from a qualified trainer.

- my controversial post 😆

Do you use an e-collar?

Having a reactive dog is hard. It can be hard to train, it can feel lonely, and some days it will test you.

Through my own training journey with my dog and training other reactive dogs, I’ve learned that these 5 things played a key role in success in addition to other active training techniques.

▪️Is it a perfect recipe for every dog? Nope. But I’ve seen this work for most and it worked for my severely dog reactive dog.

▪️Are these 5 things the only thing you’ll need to do? No, you’ll likely need to actually work on the root cause of the reactivity too. Fear, insecurity, over arousal, frustration etc.

One of the most important things I did for my reactive dog was working on his reactivity in controlled setting and trying to train with more intention. This means going out of your way to set up situations so your reactive dog (and you) can have success around their triggers.
