🐰 HAPPY EASTER 🐰
I am sad to report that we are down to four puppies. One of the boys didn’t make it through the night. If you saw yesterday’s photo you may have noticed that one puppy looked slightly yellow. That boy was absolutely perfect, but was born in a sac full of meconium. Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) occurs when a puppy inhales meconium (first stool) into their lungs before or during birth, often due to the puppy being past its due date - and that is exactly what I know happened. I suctioned him out immediately and continued to do so, but he had inhaled so much that my efforts weren’t enough to beat the odds.
I have already had a few conversations on why I didn’t choose a c-section earlier. As a breeder my number one concern is always my girls. I have to balance the pros and cons of every single choice I make. I knew it was risky waiting on a c-section, but Charlotte is my everything. The risk to her was much less if I could avoid the c-section. Sadly that decision cost the life of two puppies in this litter. It is extremely rare and scary when a dog goes past her due date, and I hope it never ever happens again. I have no reason to believe that these four puppies are in any danger. There was no clear ‘birth issue’ like there was with the other two that have passed. I will continue to watch that they gain and grow steadily as the first three days are the most crucial.
