Animal Welfare Society

Animal Welfare Society AWS provides humane shelter, veterinary care, canine training and resources to pets and pet families in our community.

The Animal Welfare Society exists to serve as the safety net for lost and homeless pets and to provide access to affordable services and resources necessary for long term wellbeing so pets and their families stay together and thrive. To achieve this mission, AWS operates a progressive animal shelter and adoption center on a 40 acre campus in Kennebunk and satellite adoption centers throughout nort

hern New England. AWS’ life-saving community programs include Pets and Survivors to Safety, Paws in Stripes and Paws Across America. AWS’ services to the greater community include Youth Programs, Behavior and Training classes, spay/neuter assistance through the Cleo Fund, veterinary and wellness care at the AWS Community Veterinary Clinic and community resources through Stay@Home. AWS serves as the animal control impound facility for 21 municipalities in York County, providing safety and shelter to lost and abandoned pets. Annually, more than 4,000 animals receive care – and find new homes – at AWS. The AWS Community Veterinary Clinic provided wellness services, including surgeries, examinations and vaccinations to nearly 8,500 pets of community members, in addition to AWS resident pets. Stay@Home provides resources to families and pets, including pet food, low-cost or complimentary veterinary care, temporary boarding and supplies, in an effort to keep pets and families together during times of financial hardship. Additional community programs, such as Humane Education and Canine Training bring education, training and lessons to countless community members of all ages each year. AWS’ operations, adoption center, programs and services are supported by a staff of more than 35 full- and part-time employees and a team of more than 150 dedicated volunteers. Volunteers donate more than 36,000 hours of their time annually in the Adoption Center, in the Veterinary Clinic and in their own homes as foster families. We are able to fulfill our mission through the generosity of those who contribute through financial gifts, in-kind support and bequests. These funds go directly toward the care of the animals at the shelter and to programs that benefit the people and animals in our communities.

From being a shy cat in the shelter, to winning our March Madness competition to getting adopted, Saffron has had a journey we've all loved following. And now, her adopters recently shared this heartwarming update with us:

“We had resisted getting a cat because we travel often. Nevertheless, on April 1 we traveled to AWS to get Saffron. Since the staff insisted that she was a barn cat (and she seemed half-wild), we did know what to expect. She did hide under a low shelf in the living room for three days. Only coming out at night to eat and use the litter box, but on the fourth day she walked out into the open and went to the kitchen to eat. After eating, she sat nervously looking us, but she never again retreated to her hiding place.
Within a few days, she was sitting in our laps. And after two weeks, she came upstairs to sleep on the bed with us. She still waits until she is invited to sit on a lap, and she spends a lot of time batting her toys around the living room. When she begins to claw the furniture, my wife tells her “No!” sharply and she stops at once. My wife speaks to her as if she understands English, and sometimes it almost seems that she does. She obeys almost like a well-trained dog. She is certainly one of the most intelligent cats I have known when it comes to human interaction. Although she has been with us only two months, she seems as if she has been our cat forever. Thank you AWS!”

Tyrone is affectionate, charming and a total love bug who’s ready to soak up all the attention you can give. He’s living with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), and is missing a front leg, but neither slows him down from living life to the fullest.

So take this as your sign to pause your scrolling and meet Tyrone. We think you’ll fall in love pretty quickly.

What’s better than having one new best friend? Having two! My name is Champ, and I’m hoping to go home with my best friend, Jingles. We’re a bonded pair who have become experts at sticking together. Wherever one of us goes, the other is usually right behind. Jingles is a little quieter than I am, but that’s okay. We balance each other out perfectly. We’re looking for a home where we can stay side by side, continue building confidence and be two peas in a pod!

When Dozer was adopted earlier this year, nobody could have predicted just life-changing that connection would become.

From being able to help detect some of his adopters medical issues through scent training, to taking on service dog training, he's made a massive impact on his new home. Happy Homes like this are a great reminder of how adoptions can change lives in ways we never expect:

"We adopted Dozer in February of 2026. We were told he would be shy and timid until he got used to us. But, the second he got home he immediately attached himself to us.

Dozer has incredible manners and has improved moral for everyone so much! But the biggest thing is, I have some medical issues that Dozer is able to detect. This put us into the concept of scent training, and he is now a couple months into service dog training and doing fantastically! He is lovingly called Doki sometimes but his name Dozer always stays. He’s been the best thing to happen to me!"

⚠️ Gator sighting on the beach... 🐊

Thankfully this gator is only interested in chomping on treats! He had a fun beach day getting to explore the shoreline, soak up the fresh air and be in his element. This goofy guy loves getting out for adventures, spending time with his people and making every outing a fun one.

Now, he's just looking for a family to share all of life's adventures with!

The dog version was fun… but we couldn’t leave the cats out of it 🐱😅

Some of these “kittens” are a few months old. Some are just a *few* more months old than that.

Either way, they’re all just as adorable and looking for homes of their own! 🤩
