K9 Behavior College

K9 Behavior College Central CA Dog Training. Dog Behaviorist offering specialized dog training programs, rehabilitation and in-home sessions.

Trainer for Cesar Millan & Pawsitive Change Program. We are a dog rehabilitation team, specializing in aggressive / fearful / anxious dogs. Here at K9 Behavior College we believe that natures way is best and we try to honor dogs for who they are. We practice dog psychology before we teach dog training, which means we believe that the mental state of the dog ultimately controls their behavior. Dogs

can be well trained or "good dogs" but still have anxiety, aggression, insecurity and other unhealthy issues that lead to many "bad behaviors". When your dog trusts you and sees you as a provider and protector, all the unhealthy behaviors fall away. Then training and teaching your dog becomes fun and successful!

Caitlin Lebel and I have been working together for about a year now and I couldn’t ask for a better training partner. 💓🐕 I’m excited to announce that we will be teaching a weekend workshop together in Portland, Maine this August 26 and 27th! This workshop will be very hands-on, covering the essentials of dog training and behavior, as well as building a strong foundation for both dogs owners and dog trainers. Whether you are looking to help your own dog, or expand your knowledge as a dog trainer/professional, this event is for you. You can register here: https://www.canineclubhouseme.com/summer-workshop
We really hope to see you there!

So many have asked how Pep came to be in our lives, so I thought I would tell the story. If you know me, you know I’ve always been happy with two dogs. Plus Sonar and Bear have such a great relationship that I never wanted to mess up that dynamic by bringing in a third. However, Sonar will be 12 this year and has slowed down quite a bit, so in the back of my mind, I knew Bear would probably needed a companion soon. Bear can be picky about who he chooses to be friends with though, so any dog that I kept would be based on his compatibility with them and not really about me.

Right around Thanksgiving I got a call from a really nice man who had found a husky in Oildale about a year ago. She was micro chipped, but the owners refused to claim her. He did not have space or time for a husky but decided to keep her and try to find her a good home. Pep proved to be way more than he could handle! As a young husky she was very spirited 😅 she would steal anything she could find, bullied their senior pug, took off any chance she could get and just generally would choose naughtiness at any opportunity.

She started her three weeks of board & train and once she was here, I saw a dog who was joyful, confident, super social and very sweet. I also saw that my boys had fallen in love with her, and she and Bear became best buddies. We worked on all her specific issues, and by the time she was ready to go home she was basically perfect. No more stealing or running away. She was still very confident with other dogs, but no longer pushy. Her recall was amazing and most importantly, she had learned to be calm. Her owner was super happy with her progress, but mentioned in passing that this would make it easier for him to find her a good home. As we talked, I realized she might be the perfect dog for us—not only did my boys love her, and she fit into our lives seamlessly, but she was also a huge help in the work that I do. Having a joyful, social, confident dog is priceless as a dog trainer and I told him then and there that she could live with us and I would give her the best possible home. He was so happy that he cried, and I knew it was all meant to be!

When I give Sonar a bone he eats immediately but Hershey always takes his and buries it away in a special spot for later😭🥰

What’s the number one piece of advice that I give to all my clients? It’s really simple: SLOW DOWN. Now that can mean many things... sometimes it means to literally slow down; whether you’re rushing through the walk, or putting the leash on too fast, or not taking time to get their attention before giving commands etc. But other times it’s more metaphorical; meaning don’t expect so much of them so quickly, don’t push them so hard, don’t expect perfection in new situations, and don’t give so much trust so quickly. We do a minimum of three weeks board and train here, and one of the reasons is because I like to take my time with the dogs- especially younger dogs or more sensitive dogs. I may put a leash on a dog 10 to 20 times before we actually go to the next step of moving forward. Sometimes that’s because they get overwhelmed by the leash, or maybe it’s because they get too excited by it, but taking the time to move slowly and repeat things is a very important part of how we train here. If you find that all of the sudden your tools aren’t working or your dog is checking out or they’re fighting you more, I strongly suggest you try slowing down and taking a few steps back. Try this BEFORE you use more force or a stronger tool. Remember a lot of our dogs behavior has to do with our relationship with them, and you will have a lot more trust and respect if you do things at a pace that works for both of you!

Morty turned a year old during his stay with us, and he truly has grown so much!! I was insanely proud of him during his go-home session, he has transformed from an out of control puppy to a sweet and gentle adolescent, ready and willing to take direction. His owners were so happy🎊 and they told me they always knew he could be a good boy, even though everyone else told them he was crazy, they had faith in him and it has paid off!! I’m going to miss this goofy cattle dog but I know we will see him again soon.😭❤️🐶

Andy and Parlays first trip to Home Depot👏👏These flower girls did so good!! 🌸🌺

It’s been a good day for Andy! She had her first session with her parents yesterday and it went really well. Today she was able to have a great walk with Brolly and for the first time ever decided she wanted to play with us.😍🐶Rehab and training is definitely not all about rules and corrections. For a dog that was shut down and fearful when she got here a week ago, it’s fantastic to see her being silly and playful! 💕🙌🐕

Look at these amazing pictures of Hector! He’s in his 5th week of Pawsitive Change and totally thriving! I’m so incredibly proud of him, from to the to , he is now paying it forward in prison. His sweet nature with other dogs means that he has helped a few of our more shy program pups gain confidence through his friendship. 😭❤️ It’s yet another example not only to the resiliency of dogs but evidence that our guys are able to provide true rehabilitation for them. @ North Kern State Prison

Had a great session with this smart, pretty girl yesterday. Pippin the is basically perfect but there’s a couple things she does that her parents really don’t like, such as when she steals banana bread off the counter or sneaks out the side door to explore the neighborhood.😅 Pippin is a great example of a dog who was very obedient, but didn’t understand that boundaries needed to be respected even when mom and dad were not around. I showed them how to first teach Pippin what the boundaries were, and then how to set up scenarios that allow her to make good choices on her own. She did really fantastic and I know if they are consistent that everyone will be successful! 🙌🐕❤️ @ Seven Oaks Country Club

If we’re gonna do play time then we always make sure to do chill time as well-it’s a great way when our dogs get all revved up to help them calm down again. Being relaxed together is also an important part of social interactions.
