Help Protect Pets from Flystrike!

Flystrike is a painful and potentially devastating condition that affects outdoor pets during the warmer months. It happens when flies bite a dog's ears and create open wounds. Those wounds can quickly become infested with fly eggs, which hatch into maggots that feed on the damaged tissue.

The good news? Flystrike is preventable.

One of the simplest and most effective prevention tools is a fly bag. By reducing the number of flies around pets and their living areas, fly bags help protect vulnerable animals from painful injuries before they happen.

We're currently in need of fly bags as well as "Flys-Off" from our Amazon Wishlist so we can distribute them to families caring for outdoor pets throughout our community. For many pet owners facing financial barriers, these supplies can be difficult to purchase, but they can make a life-changing difference for the pets who depend on them.

Our urgent care team has been seeing a noticeable increase in dog fight injuries lately, and unfortunately, it's not just happening in one type of situation.

We're seeing:
🐾 Dogs who live together
🐾 Neighbor dogs
🐾 Loose dogs
🐾 Dogs meeting on walks
🐾 Dogs who apparently woke up and chose chaos

Summer means more time outside, more neighborhood activity, more walks, more backyard hangouts, and more opportunities for dogs to find themselves in situations they'd rather not be in.

A few reminders from your friends at PRCKC:

🔒 Check gates and fences before letting your dog out.
🚶 Keep dogs leashed unless they're in a secure area.
🦴 Be mindful of toys, treats, and food around groups of dogs.
👀 Supervise dog interactions. Even between dogs who are usually besties.
🐕 Respect that not every dog wants to make a new friend today.

Because while your dog may be an angel 99.9% of the time, sometimes all it takes is one stressful moment, one dropped hot dog, or one misunderstood sniff to turn a good day into an urgent care visit.

Trust us, we'd much rather see your dog at a vaccine clinic than while we're cleaning and repairing bite wounds. ❤️‍🩹

A huge thank you to Realty ONE Group Metro Home Pros for showing up for pets in our community!

They organized a donation drive and surprised us with an incredible haul of leashes, collars, pet food, toys, treats, litter, and so much more. The kind of supplies that don’t just fill our shelves, they directly keep pets fed, comfortable, and cared for when families are going through tough times.

Even better, their team didn’t just drop off donations and head out. They stayed for a tour of the clinic, learned more about what we do at PRC, and created content to help spread the word to their network! That kind of partnership helps us reach even more people and pets who need support. 💚

Yes, dogs really do eat socks! 🧦

This week, a dog scheduled for a routine neuter surprised everyone by vomiting up an entire tube sock while waiting in his kennel.

Luckily, he did not require further treatment for a foreign body, but this is still a very important reminder of what dogs are capable of getting into (and ingesting) at home.

Socks are one of the most common foreign materials we see dogs swallow. And unfortunately, they don’t always come back up this easily.

Common foreign body ingestions can include:
🧦 Clothing items (especially socks and underwear)
🧸 Plush toys that are easily shredded
🧶 Rope or string
🗑️ Trash, wrappers, and food packaging
🍖 Bones or other animal by-products

Depending on the size, shape, and material, ingested objects may:
⚠️ Pass on their own
⚠️ Cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset
⚠️ Lead to an intestinal blockage requiring emergency surgery

Prevention reminders:
🔒 Keep laundry baskets and dirty clothes secured
🗑️ Make trash inaccessible to pets
🐶 Supervise dogs with new or high-value items

Remember: if they can reach it, they very well may try to eat it!

Feel Good Friday: Spreading a little love… one pup cup at a time 🍦

Every Wednesday evening, our staff and volunteers are out providing vaccinations and vital resources to pets whose owners are experiencing houselessness. Two of our incredible volunteers, Stacey and Laura, decided to make outreach even sweeter. Alongside pet food, coats, leashes, and vaccines, they brought pup cups and plenty of smiles to go with them! 🥰

We're so grateful for the volunteers and staff who continually go above and beyond for the pets and people we serve. We hope these sweet faces brought you some joy and warm fuzzy feelings as you head into your weekend! 💗

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and honors the strength, perseverance, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history.

Juneteenth is both a celebration and a reminder. A celebration of freedom and a reminder of the work that continues in pursuit of equity, opportunity, and justice for all.

At the Pet Resource Center of Kansas City, we are grateful to serve a diverse community of pet owners who love their animals deeply. We believe that pets and the people who care for them deserve compassion, support, and access to resources, regardless of their circumstances.

As we commemorate this important day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to learn, reflect, celebrate, and support one another.
