Did you know that a kitten can get pregnant at as early as four months old? Don't let your kittens have kittens! Cats can be fixed as long as they are two months old and weigh two pounds. Don't put it off and risk an unwanted and expensive litter!

How wonderful for this pet and his family! Heartland Shelter Medicine is proud to support the Spay & Neuter Collaborative of Kansas City and participate in their events!

THIS IS WHY WE'RE HERE. King was Lakisha's brother's dog. Unfortunately, her brother became incarcerated, so Lakisha generously stepped up and took King into her home. Her kids fell in love with King!

One day her landlord saw King and noticed he wasn't neutered and reminded her that pets in the apartment complex must be fixed. Lakisha looked into it, but it was just too expensive. Sadly, she started making arrangements to surrender King to a shelter. Then she saw that SNCKC's free spay/neuter event was coming up and she secured an appointment.

NOW--1) King is neutered and won't be making any puppies. 2) King is not in a shelter that already has too many dogs. 3) The kids get to keep their beloved pet.

This is exactly what SNCKC's mission is all about.

Kansas City folks, this is a great opportunity to get pets spayed and neutered!

‼️Is your pet afraid of fireworks? It's time to act now!‼️

Hello friends, this is Dr. Walker with Heartland Shelter Medicine. As I write you, we are only 4 weeks away from one of the biggest holidays of the year, Independence Day! 🎉You may be looking forward to the fireworks, but the odds are your pet isn't. Many dogs and cats feel fearful and anxious about fireworks, storms and our summertime celebrations because they involve lots of noise, strangers and unique experiences. 😱

If your pet experiences fear, anxiety and stress in situations like these, NOW is the time to reach out to your veterinarian! Your vet can prescribe medication for situational anxiety, to help Fluffy and Fido cope when the sky fills with booms and flashes. I usually recommend anxiety medications like Trazodone or Alprazolam for these situations. I do not recommend acepromazine, a tranquilizing medicine, because typically it doesn't provide anxiety relief. 🩺💊😻

This is also the time to update your pet's microchip information and make sure they are wearing a safe collar or harness with visible identification. Summertime, especially the week after the 4th of July is the busiest time of year for animal shelter intakes. Nobody ever expects their pet to get lost, but I promise you, any pet CAN get lost. Make sure your furry family member has the ID they need to make it home if the unexpected happens to you! 🥰🏠🥰

I hope everyone will have a safe and anxiety free summer,
Dr. Sandra Kay Walker ❤️

This Pride Month, let's take a lesson from our shelter pets — they don't care about how you identify, who you love, or what labels you use. All they need is love, kindness, and forever family. Happy Pride Everyone! 🏳️‍🌈🐾 ❤
