‼️Is your pet afraid of fireworks? It's time to act now!‼️
Hello friends, this is Dr. Walker with Heartland Shelter Medicine. As I write you, we are only 4 weeks away from one of the biggest holidays of the year, Independence Day! 🎉You may be looking forward to the fireworks, but the odds are your pet isn't. Many dogs and cats feel fearful and anxious about fireworks, storms and our summertime celebrations because they involve lots of noise, strangers and unique experiences. 😱
If your pet experiences fear, anxiety and stress in situations like these, NOW is the time to reach out to your veterinarian! Your vet can prescribe medication for situational anxiety, to help Fluffy and Fido cope when the sky fills with booms and flashes. I usually recommend anxiety medications like Trazodone or Alprazolam for these situations. I do not recommend acepromazine, a tranquilizing medicine, because typically it doesn't provide anxiety relief. 🩺💊😻
This is also the time to update your pet's microchip information and make sure they are wearing a safe collar or harness with visible identification. Summertime, especially the week after the 4th of July is the busiest time of year for animal shelter intakes. Nobody ever expects their pet to get lost, but I promise you, any pet CAN get lost. Make sure your furry family member has the ID they need to make it home if the unexpected happens to you! 🥰🏠🥰
I hope everyone will have a safe and anxiety free summer,
Dr. Sandra Kay Walker ❤️
