It's National Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷✨🐾
Routine at home dental care is vital to maintaining a healthy mouth, and significantly contributes to the overall health of your pet! There are many things you can do at home, including:

🦷 Feeding your dog a dental diet accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC), which slows plaque and tartar accumulation by either mechanical or chemical means.

🦷 Brushing or wiping your dog's teeth daily. This is one of the most effective ways to remove plaque before it turns into tartar - *Do not use human toothpaste*

🦷 Using a VOHC-accepted water additive to reduce the bacterial count in the mouth, resulting in improved breath

🦷 Offering your dog chew toys and dental treats that are specifically designed to help reduce or remove mild tartar. Bones, horse hoofs, and antlers are not recommended as they are likely to cause broken teeth

Look for the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) Seal of Acceptance on dental products to ensure the efficacy of the product you are using!

Let's talk about ringworm! ✨ Contrary to how it sounds, ringworm is not from actual worms!
The organisms that cause ringworm infections belong to a special group of fungi known as dermatophytes. Ringworm is contagious, and transmission occurs by direct contact with the fungus via an infected person, animal, or contaminated surfaces/objects. In cats, lesions can be thickened, scaly, and have fur loss around them. In order to diagnose ringworm, the veterinarian may recommend a fungal culture, PCR testing, or examination with a Wood's lamp. When treated properly most cats fully recover from ringworm without any lasting effects! Take Crash here for example - would you guess that he had ringworm as a kitten? Jaxson recently visited our hospital after his owner found a new mass that we wanted to investigate. While here, Dr. Beesley performed a fast and non-invasive procedure called a Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA). Fine needle aspiration involves collecting cells from the mass in a hollow needle, then transferring them to a glass slide for evaluation under a microscope. FNA is not always diagnostic due to the small sample size, but it can contribute valuable information that helps determine a care plan. If your pet has lumps or bumps - when in doubt, have us check it out!
