A Week in Reviews ✨

Group classes begin June 21st, private lessons are available at Northland Animal Welfare Society on Sundays and Wednesdays, and in-home training or enrichment drop-ins are available six days a week with three professional dog trainers!

Miss Beatrix went to Hy-Vee yesterday to work on her reactivity to people, and it’s safe to say she had a blast! She was rolling over for belly rubs right by the front door.

Parking lots can be a fantastic place to work on people reactivity. Most people are focused on their own errands, which means they’re less likely to approach or interact with your dog. The environment is also fairly predictable - people are typically walking to and from their cars or heading into the store, rather than moving in random zig zagged directions.

That predictability can make it much easier for reactive or sensitive dogs to observe people, practice staying calm, and build positive associations without feeling overwhelmed.

These supervised playgroups help dogs practice appropriate social skills while owners learn how to recognize healthy play, communication, and when dogs may need a break.

Happy Pride Month! 🌈🐾

This Pride Month, we’re celebrating authenticity, acceptance, and the courage it takes to show up as yourself. Everyone deserves to feel safe, understood, and valued for who they are.

Just as we strive to create spaces where dogs can learn and thrive without fear, we believe people deserve the same kindness, respect, and understanding.

Dogs teach us all sorts of things: kindness, empathy, forgiveness, and the value of seeing individuals for who they are. They don’t judge people based on who they love, the color of their skin, their gender identity, or where they come from. They simply love the people in their lives for being themselves.

Our goal has always been to create a welcoming, inclusive space for both people and their dogs. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.

Yesterday marked Week 3 of Adolescence Class, and Gizmo is blossoming! 🌸

His engagement with his owner has improved so much, and he learned “leave it” in less than 5 minutes. Pretty impressive for a teenage dog! 👏🏼

After just a few minutes of training, Gizmo was able to leave a smelly bully stick alone and he’ll even do it when the kids ask him to!

“Leave it” is one of those skills that can make a huge difference in everyday life. It helps keep dogs safe and can prevent an emergency vet visit if they come across something they shouldn’t eat.
