Giving Grove

Giving Grove History:
In 2011, our founders tired of emergency food distribution embarked on a year of study to identify an alternative approach to building food security.

The Giving Grove helps communities grow sustainable, free food through neighborhood orchards that provide fresh produce, environmental benefits, and lasting food security. Our mission is to provide healthy calories, strengthen community, and improve the urban environment through a nationwide network of sustainable little orchards to dramatically increase access to healthy food. We envision:

-tho

usands of little orchards in food insecure urban neighborhoods across the nation;
-a system of local food production that feeds people for decades;
-a national network of neighborhood stewards trained in holistic methods for growing fruit; and
-urban neighborhoods transformed by their own work and generosity. They crafted a simple approach designed to make a big impact in neighborhoods that have the least access to healthy food. The “little orchard” concept was unveiled in 2012 as a program of Kansas City Community Gardens enabling us to share resources, jumpstart production and tap into an existing network. Having demonstrated successful orcharding locally, The Giving Grove became a separate charitable organization and piloted expansion regionally in 2017. The Giving Grove now has five affiliate cities and plans expansion into 15 more.

From Maine’s misty hillsides to the heart of Kansas City, people everywhere are working to preserve fruit trees and the stories they hold. 🌳❤️

Read the The Wall Street Journal article to see how orchardists are reviving lost varieties and why it matters for the future of our food and communities.

Fall planting is in full swing across Giving Grove cities! Thanks to the generous support of our friends at OXO, six new community orchards are taking root, growing fresh, sustainable food, cleaning the air, and transforming neighborhood greenspaces into places of connection and resilience.

We’re so grateful for OXO’s partnership and their ongoing commitment through 1% for the Planet, supporting causes that build sustainable food systems, food education, and food access. 🌱

Extreme heat is one of the deadliest climate threats, and cities are especially vulnerable because concrete traps heat.

In Durham, NC, researchers used more than 40 sensors across the city to measure urban heat more accurately than a single airport weather station. This groundbreaking data will help communities protect people and plan smarter, cooler cities with vegetative land cover 🌳
