Today I got into a discussion with someone who claimed that the only way to train an aggressive dog is through balanced methods like shock or e-collars. When I mentioned that positive reinforcement—backed by real science—can effectively and humanely treat aggression, I was told I was “just regurgitating stuff that doesn’t work.”

Here’s the thing: I’m not just repeating what I’ve heard—I’ve done the research. Organizations like the AVSAB, IAABC, and countless certified behaviorists have published studies showing that aversive tools often increase fear and aggression, especially in already unstable dogs. Studies like Ziv (2017) and Hiby et al. (2004) back up that force-free methods not only work, but create more stable, confident, and well-adjusted dogs over time.

This conversation reminded me how easy it is for people to put blind trust in specific trainers without questioning where their methods come from. Just because someone has followers or calls themselves a “rehabilitator” doesn’t mean their approach is rooted in science—or safe. As trainers, owners, and advocates for dogs, we owe it to them to rely on evidence, not opinions.

Let’s keep pushing for informed, compassionate, and ethical training. The dogs deserve it.
