Happy to Missy, Kizzy, and Pearl! It’s time to celebrate these hardy animals known for their impressive humps, which are fatty reserves that sustain them for long periods of time. While these humps don’t store water, camels are able to hydrate quickly by drinking dozens of gallons in a few minutes.

The next time you’re at the Zoo, be sure to stop by the camel feeding station to say hello to Missy, Kizzy, and Pearl! Here are a few ways to tell the girls apart:

🐪Missy: The calmest of the three, she is lighter in color and has very close bonds with her care specialists.

🐪Kizzy: The only camel of the group with curly hair, she loves being hosed off by the care team. While she is more hesitant in personality, she will form strong bonds with people she trusts.

🐪Pearl: She is a big goofball and will lay in the sand with her head and neck curled backwards. Excellent at training and also the fluffiest.

It’s time for ! Today we celebrate not only this towering species but also the conservation efforts that are saving giraffes from a silent extinction. The Masai giraffe, which is the species you’ll find at the Zoo, is now listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to threats such as habitat loss and poaching.

The Zoo is proud to partner with Save Giraffes Now, which is creating a hopeful future for these beloved mammals. Last year, senior animal care specialist Jacob traveled to Kenya to learn more about the group's conservation efforts and delivered resources donated from the Zoo. In 2025, the Zoo will be funding the construction of two water pans at the Olosira Conservancy, which is located near Nairobi, to help both the community and wildlife like the giraffe species.

Although the Zoo’s giraffe habitat is currently being renovated and residents Willow, Makali, Chandy, Aidan and Alika are not viewable to the public, we will still be celebrating this special holiday at the chimpanzee building. Stop by to say hello to Jacob, who will have lots of information about the giraffe species and the new complex set to open in 2026!

Let’s check in with the cotton-top tamarin babies! We are happy to report that the entire tamarin family has been participating in raising, holding, and protecting the newest young ones. Because these monkeys are often high in the habitat trees at Sobela Ocean Aquarium, animal care specialist Bayley has kindly given us an up-close look at the two tamarin babies. The footage is every bit as precious as you would expect. 😍

Bubbly…bouncing…Bitro! In case you missed our recent post, this energetic youngster is one of the Zoo’s newest red-ruffed lemur residents. Born to dad Fred and mom Hydra on April 21, Bitro (which translates to “rabbit” in the Malagasy language) is viewable each day at the Birds of Africa aviary.

Fun fact about Bitro: He has a condition called heterochromia. One of his eyes is green like his dad’s, and the other is more of an amber color matching his mom’s eyes!

On this TOADally tremendous Tuesday, we have some exciting news to report! Although the Wyoming toad species nearly went extinct in 1994 due to factors like toxic pesticides, their numbers are on the rise again thanks to the conservation efforts of the Wyoming Toad Breeding, Reintroduction, and Field Survey Program. The KCZoo and other facilities participate in this initiative that is designed to restore these critically endangered amphibians to their native range.

This year, the KCZoo team produced a total of 6,663 tadpoles – a new record for our facility. These tadpoles were driven to Wyoming yesterday, with 75 tadpoles remaining at the Zoo for future breeding and reintroduction.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums' SAFE Wyoming Toad initiative is one of many programs that are providing hope for endangered and critically endangered animals. Learn about all of the SAFE programs at https://bit.ly/3A1Zbxw.

Smile a big toothy grin in honor of World Crocodile Day! The next time you’re at the Zoo, be sure to stop by the West Africa dwarf crocodile habitat to visit Lua. Her species is identified by its small stature, broad snout, and tough scales, and it can be found in rainforest regions with plentiful small rivers, mangroves, and swamps. African dwarf crocodiles are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List due to issues like habitat loss and hunting.

Measuring about 40 inches in length, Lua is becoming more confident and is often seen in the water near her habitat buddy, Patch the Krefft's water turtle. However, if you don’t spot her immediately, be sure to look in the habitat vegetation, where she camouflages seamlessly!
