Excitement is in the air because rhinoceros hornbill parents Boni and Raja have a new chick named Jambi! This hornbill species will spend its first few months in a nest box that mimics a tree cavity, similar to the ones to ones you might find in hornbills’ native range of Indonesia. During this time, mom Boni mudded herself into the nest until the chick was large enough to thermoregulate on its own. Raja was a big helper and delivered food through a small hole. Like other hornbill moms, Boni eventually left the nest and resealed it until the chick was fully fledged.

Jambi hatched on May 3 and can now be seen in the rhinoceros hornbill habitat along with mom and dad. He did much of his growing in the nest, so he is now quite large! The name Jambi is inspired by the province of Indonesia that is located on the east coast of Sumatra.

This addition of the hornbill chick provides hope to this species, which has been classified as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). We proudly work with The Association of Zoos and Aquariums' SAFE (Saving Animal Species From Extinction) Asian Hornbill initiative, which seeks to support the sustainability and protection of wild Asian hornbills within their natural ranges from poaching, trade and habitat loss or degradation through science-based, and stakeholder-inclusive conservation action.

Betty Blue is a mom! This 11-year-old Bennett’s wallaby gave birth to a joey on approximately February 7, and the young one is now visible in the habitat. We think you’ll love its name: Bubba Blue! The proud papa is 7-year-old Zeek.

At birth, a wallaby joey is about the size of a jellybean, naked and blind. The joey will then crawl into its mom's pouch, attach to a ni**le, and continue to develop and grow fur. The eyes don’t open until after they are four months old.

At around five months of age, the baby will start to poke its head out, but its body hair won't be totally grown until after seven months old. The joeys of Bennett's wallabies typically become independent of the pouch around nine months of age. Bubba Blue is nearly seven months old, so he will still be in the pouch for a bit longer. On your next visit, see if you can spot this new wallaby addition in the Australia section of the Zoo!

There’s a new potato on the block! Rock hyrax mom Idaho and dad Perseus became parents on July 28 to a healthy baby boy called Cappy, which is inspired by its scientific name of Procavia capensis. This is Idaho's 3rd time giving birth, and the care specialists say that she is a wonderful mom. Cappy is growing larger by the day and is already jumping and climbing around the habitat with mom and dad. You can visit him in the African Kopje habitat!
