Always nice to get an update!

Woody was able to successfully disengage from a large dog (usually a trigger for him) and sniff the ground instead. This is exactly the type of behavior weā€™re looking for when it comes to modifying reactivity. Iā€™m cautiously optimistic about this progress report!

More importantly I was pleased to see Woody coming right up to me while I held the harness.

One of the biggest misconceptions about enrichment is that you need a cabinet full of expensive puzzle toys.

You don't.

Enrichment isn't about how much money you spend. It's about meeting your dog's needs in ways that fit your lifestyle.

ā€œWhen my dog snaps at other dogs, do I justā€¦ā€

Nope!

If you wait until after your dog has shown an agonistic behavior, you could actually be reinforcing aggression! Or worse, if you pair shouting or leash corrections with being close to certain stimuli, like other dogs, you could be telling your dog that their fear or anger is justified. Additionally, every time you use harsh methods with your dog, you take coins out of the trust jar and leave your relationship destabilized.

Steph & Raffi have been working super hard since he came home around Christmas to get rid of some annoying & dangerous behaviors like barking, lunging, and biting.

How did they see so much success in a 7-month period?

We set up for success and rewarded desirable behavior instead. Any agonistic behavior was taken as information about where Raffiā€™s comfort level was at the time.

Today, Raffi was able to negotiate for more space with the tools heā€™s been given in training, and we had a successful dog-to-dog intro with no barking, growling, lunging, or biting.

Way to go team Raffi!

What type of equipment should I get for walking my dog?

Like all good questions in dog training, thereā€™s only one answer:

It depends!

This dog frequently takes walks on only a harness and 15-ft leash attached to her housemateā€™s harness. What? For real.

Today, however, we are navigating Third Fridays on West 39th and thereā€™s a lot going on outside my office. Iā€™ve decided to use a martingale for this particular loop around the block so that I can control Blueā€™s head if necessary. If I had to pick the perfect dog to wear a martingale collar to go potty, it would be Blue.

Blue:
šŸ¶ knows how to walk on a loose leash (trained originally with a harness after the slip lead method failed)
šŸ¶ has to go outside frequently due to medical issues
šŸ¶ could easily slip out of a flat collar
šŸ¶ has a history of leash reactivity with other dogs
šŸ¶ needs to navigate lots of people and dogs in tight spaces

To get ready for lots of activity on the street, we met her needs by doing a lot of sniffing and puttering around.

By taking pressure off the leash, Iā€™m putting coins in the trust jar.

Remember - the leash is a seatbelt, not a steering wheel.
